Republican Brown Wins in Massachusetts

Wow.

In an epic upset in liberal Massachusetts, Republican Scott Brown rode a wave of voter anger to win the U.S. Senate seat held by the late Edward M. Kennedy for nearly half a century, leaving President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul in doubt and marring the end of his first year in office.

The loss by the once-favored Democrat Martha Coakley in the Democratic stronghold was a stunning embarrassment for the White House after Obama rushed to Boston on Sunday to try to save the foundering candidate. Her defeat signaled big political problems for the president’s party this fall when House, Senate and gubernatorial candidates are on the ballot nationwide.

I’ll admit… I saw this coming in the polls and such, but I didn’t think it would actually happen.  Clearly there’s something drastically wrong in Washington when a Republican wins a senate seat in Massachusetts.

  1. Exactly one year ago, they said conservatism was dead.  Tonight, Scott Brown and the people of Massachusetts said “they” were wrong.

  2. I agree, wow. There was certainly a bit of “throw out the bums” here, but I also think it speaks to a deadly arrogance on the part of the Democrats. They thought they had a lock on this seat and ran a very weak (and apparently inept) candidate. Mr PP is right - they were so very wrong. BO should be worried. Fortunately, divided goverment usually governs best.

  5. I don’t know if any of you guys saw the Frank Luntz focus group tonight, but it was good news for us common folk.  Basically a bunch of Massachusetts Dems spoke up and said they voted for Brown simply because the Dems in Washington and Obama were cutting all sorts of horrible back room deals that would destroy the current healthcare system.  They didn’t like it and wanted to send a message.

Hard to believe we’ve made it here after the mess the last six-months.  Taking down Teddy’s seat to do it…..at the site of the Boston Tea Party.  Good times.  Good times.

  7. Who didn’t see this coming?

In the past twenty years Democratic enrollment has shrunk from 48 percent of the Massachusetts electorate to 37 percent.  Repubs are smaller yet.

Crow all you want about a win for conservatives.

Independent voters delivered this because they were fed-up over the Dems on healthcare.

The GOP might take a lesson from this and add it to their mid-term election playbook…

  8. Now we get to watch the dems throw Coakley under the bus, back it up and run over her again and again.

I for one am hoping the dems continue to excuse this away and play it down.  The longer they keep their heads in the sand the better November 2nd will be!

  9. I don’t know if any of you guys saw the Frank Luntz focus group tonight, but it was good news for us common folk.

I saw it.  I thought it was the most interesting segment of coverage all night.  Despite the repeated claims that this wasn’t an agenda on the Health Care bill or Obama, at least for this particular focus group, that was EXACTLY what it was about.  And it was made clear by a panel full of Democrats and Independents who votes for Obama just 13 months ago.

I also found it very revealing that a number of the participants who acknowledged voting for Coakley, and supporting the Health Care bill adamantly supported his immediate seating in the Senate, and made it clear they would have no tolerance for games being played with the seat to try and give Reid extra time to get another vote taken in the Senate, if one is needed, to get the final bill passed.

I don’t care what anyone says ... there is a LOT of anger out there, and its not confined to just the people libs mockingly refer to as ‘The Teabaggers’.  The anger cuts across party and ideological lines, and its a response to the obvious disregard of the will of the people, and the arrogant ways in which the Democrats have tried to cram legislation down the American people’s throats, weather they want it or not.  Brown had a great line in his victory speech when he talked about Congress’ impatience with dissent, and conversely the comfort they seem to have doing the people’s business behind closed doors.

It is going to be very interesting to see what the Dems next moves are.  If they proceed with trying to cram the Health Care legislation through, in the wake of this election, I think the backlash in November will be even deeper than its already setting up to be.  Its also going to be interesting to see how many, if any, Senators and Congressmen from swing states and districts are willing to walk the plank for Obama, Reid and Pelosi now.  There are already some signs that they may be losing Bhay and Webb.  Can Lincoln, Bennet, and even Ben Nelson who isn’t even up this year, be far behind?

By the way ... Do I get a set of steak knives for being the closest in predicting the winner and the margin of this race on this Blog?

  10. In some respects, I agree with Swampgas: Republicans need to take a lesson from this.  But I believe it IS a win for Conservatism.  Independents saw the “Change” and didn’t like it.  It was not only back room deals, but deals for a huge leap to Socialism.  They didn’t like it.

Scott Brown comes off as a regular guy.

  12. For even more fun - head out to the MSM sites and watch as their heads snap back.

The people have spoken…  will the Dems and the Repubs be listening now?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjpTFpH9FFM&feature=player_embedded

This video (via johnny dollar’s place) shows a focus group of voters giving Obamacare the thumbs down.  They also want an end to one-party rule and the Democrat spending orgy. These are NOT conservatives or Republicans. The group is comprised solely of Democrats and independents who voted for President Obama.  It has to be seen to be believed:

  15. First we need to thank the good people of Mass for turning out and changing the course of this off-the-rails country.  We need to thank the Mass Dems most since they out number the Reps 3.5:1.  Dems made this victory and we should thank them.

Anyone who is left thinking that this is not a referendum on Obama and the Dems should continue on that manra right up to their next defeat.

Second…..I gotta think that this is going to cause a surge in truck sales like the Obama inspired gun sales.  This may be the single event that turns around the US auto industry.  Its a GMC by the way.

  18. SayWha is referring to the truck wreck that is Obama when he is too far from his teleprompter. (campaign speech for Coakley)

    http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/01/obama-at-coakley-event-i-need-leaders-like-martha-by-my-side.php

Now, I’ve heard about some of the ads that Martha’s opponent is running. He’s driving his truck around the commonwealth
    .......................................................
Forget the truck. (Laughter.) Everybody can buy a truck
    .........................................................................
And he decided to park his truck on Wall Street
    .........................................................................
It gives you a sense of who the respective candidates are going to be fighting for, despite the rhetoric, despite the television ads, despite the truck.
    .................................................................................
So I’d think long and hard about getting in that truck with Martha’s opponent

  19. Thanks Horse!  Yes, thats what I meant.  Obama and Martha or was it Marcia…...they couldn’t stop talking about the truck.

A recent post on Scott Brown’s facebook page says, “Change is Hope”.
Sounds good to me! But hey, I already drive a truck.

  20. I am very pleased that the people of MA finally woke up and voted for Mr. Brown.  This is a referendum on Obamacare and Obama himself.

It’s been one year and Obama has done nothing..I repeat nothing to make America a better place or a safer place.  It’s been a year and yet the left keeps trying to blame Bush.  Now when the rubber meets the road the people are realizing that we are not better off under Obama.

  21. I am curious if any of you who are stating that this is a referendum on healthcare reform could please explain how this is so considering that MA has already implemented many of the same elements of healthcare reform that are being considered nationally and especially since Scott Brown, as a state senator, voted for the same reforms in MA that he is opposing for the rest of the country.

  22. Also, I was wondering if any of you had considered that the lack of support from real liberals/progressives who stayed home on election day might’ve played a part in Brown’s historic win.

  24. djheru,
I considered that the Dems outnumber the Republicans 3.5:1 while simultaneously I considered they had better than a 50% turnout.  Sooooooo statistically SOME of the Dems musta voted for Brown.  Huh?

Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on January 20, 2010 at 1549 hrs

  25. SayWha - Independents make up half the electorate in MA, dems make up 37&. Soooooo statistically none of the dems had to vote for Brown, although some probably did.

  26. Anyone ready to take a shot at explaining the apparent disconnect between the votes Brown cast for health Care reform in MA and those he prefesses to take nationally? This is assuming djheru is accurate in his statements in #21, I haven’t looked them up.

Posted by Mike on January 20, 2010 at 1634 hrs

  27. It could be that he understands constitutional limitations on federal authority, and doesn’t believe that the feds have the authority to pass a national health plan.  Or it could be that he isn’t happy with what Mittcare has done to the state of Mass. and has decided to fight the outcome at the national level.  Or it could just be politics.  Hard to say, yet.

  28. Brown won?  Surely it must have been all the cheating the Republicans were partaking in.  That coupled with “Marcia” just not tuning her message properly.  She would’ve benefited from Obama’s teleprompter.  Maybe the White House can start a teleprompter rental service?

  30. I Dunno,

I work plenty hard for what I have, but the Demokrats are way smarter than me. So if they say that their gunna take my money and give it someone else, they must know what their talkin’ about. But I sure wonder why when the take form me and give to someone else that aint working for it, it makes them feel soooooo, good but it sure as heck does.

I dunno why they come at me so hard though, I don’t ask anything from them, I just do my business and support my family.

My mama used to say a honest days work for a honest days pay, but by the time I go and give it to the Demokrats there ain’t too much left anymore for me. Not that I’m Komplane’in but I’d sure like to catch a break.

Sounds like that guy up there in Mass a chewsetts wants me to keep a bit more of what I have, and spend what I already give a bit more smarter.

I Perticularry like the folks that want me to keep what I got. When I was talk’in to a buddy he said “that there will make you one of them tea baggers”. I said teabaggers? Are those for real? He said yep. I’m a coffee drinker myself but I guess the next time one of those vote things happen I’m gunna be abliged to vote against them there Demokrats.

  31. If it comes down to fate who’s the Prez, I’ll take Brown over Palin.

Attorney Scott Brown said in his victory speech (Note the 9/11-ish acceptance quotes):

“Our tax dollars should go to weapons to defeat [terrorists] not lawyers to defend them.”
“Raising taxes and giving new rights to terrorists is the wrong agenda for our country.”

“Yes we can.” ...spend your tax dollars on more and more and more weapons.”

Here’s an opportunity.  See, I knew I should have bought General Dynamics at $30 when G.W.B. became prez.  I figured we’d be in a major conflict in no time.  Who knew it would be two.  Maybe with Brown “yes we can” crowd, I’ll have another $$$ opportunity.  Put him in folks.
