Rampant Ignorance

Michael Mathias, in commenting on a story about a nut who shot a lady and then killed himself, has this to say:

For all the bluster about self-protection, this is how guns are mostly used

Really?  “Mostly?”  There are roughly 200 MILLION privately held firearms in this country and millions more held by governmental agencies and the military.  Shooting innocent people and suicide is a common occurrence with most of these guns? 

Personally I have several guns that have never been used in such a fashion.  Are my guns an anomaly?  I guess so… in Mathias’ mind. 

Hey, Mike… you need to get out more and join the realm of reality.

  1. I own six guns, none of them are mostly used to kill people…
    I fired over a thousand rounds in 2009, and none of them were mostly at people…

  5. This is the sad result of every fool having internet access and the free time to type whatever random thought crosses his mind.

    Why does this guy get to get us all riled up? To the point where we feel compelled to run online ourselves and respond?

    I know I may be taking a broad shot at bloggers, but I do realize not all of them are blowhards with a lot of free time. This column is certainly one worthy of reading. Still, the ability to have one’s bare, unsupported opinions be transmitted to all corners of the globe as though they’re actually worthy of anyone’s attention is (in my opinion: note the irony) way too much power for the average person to have at his disposal.

    You should see the “comments” sections in our local newspaper and TV news websites. For every one useful or intelligent comment posted, we must slog through fifteen or twenty ignorant, uninformed, frequently hate-filled comments. It’s really quite a waste of time to allow these things to be posted. But I think the media folks like the drama it generates so of course they leave the software as is.

    The best part? When the late-night newscaster actually interrupts the story to read viewers’ comments after the earlier, evening news on the same story. As if viewers’ responses to the item are, themselves, “news.” Arrrgh.

While I do agree with you Owen, I think this is more a difference of perspective than ignorance.  If you’re not using your guns to kill, are you really even “using” them at all.  Killing is what they’re for.  It’s what they’re designed to do.  If you’re not using them to kill, it’s really just masterbation, isn’t it? 

    Or at least that’s how I’d imagine the argument would go.  Not my opinion, but I think it’s a viable opinion (I’ve met some gun owners. Heh).

  7. I agree that the vast majority of guns are not used to kill people. I think his statement was out of line.

    If we apply that reasoning to other things meant to scare us it begs to question why many people believe that all Arabic and Middle Eastern people are wanting to kill us. On TV they argue that all people of the middle east should be feared more because of their origin.

    I am not afraid of either one.

    Why do people have to live in fear?

    I realize you aren’t making the argument yourself, but I thought I’d respond briefly anyway.

    There are many, many reasons to have a firearm and I know self-defense is only one of them. Still, I would say that every time I load my gun or carry it for self-defense purposes I am “using” it. Just because I don’t have to draw it or shoot someone doesn’t mean I’m not using the pistol. I would compare it to using a seat belt: I “use” it whenever I put it on, even if I don’t get in a wreck.

    Just my two cents. I know you don’t necessarily agree with the argument anyway.

  9. Look at the address.  Good bet this guy votes Democratic every time.  Look at the high crime rates in the big cities, everyone a Democratic strong hold.  Statistically speaking guns don’t kill people, Democrats kill people.
    Could we have an ugly Democrat ban? 
    How about a three day waiting period before picking a Democrat up in a bar?
