Quarter Million To Preserve Languages

Yeah, things must be tight in that state budget  rolleyes

In a time of intense financial pressure, Gov. Jim Doyle has set aside $250,000 a year in his state budget proposal to restart a longstanding state program to help American Indian tribes save their endangered languages.

Only about one-half of 1 percent of state tribal members are native speakers of the state’s five native languages, with some counting just a handful of elderly speakers, the Wisconsin State Journal reported in a series in June.

The Democratic governor said that, in spite of the $5.9 billion budget shortfall he faced in writing his budget, the state needed to act now or risk losing the opportunity to save a part of its shared heritage.

Can’t they preserve their own languages?  Is this really something necessary in light of the budget deficit and massive tax increases?  Seriously?  Some of the Tribes are rolling in gambling profits.  Let them cough up $250k.

  1. And from the other side of Doyle’s mouth he won’t fund “Real ID”.

    Sounds good to me.

  3. Why should the State do anything.  The Indian schools are run by the Feds, the tribal lands are considered to be a sovereign land so the local police cannot go there unless they are requested.  If perserving the language is so darn important, then let the Feds do it(they seem to swimming in cash nowdays) or the tribes.

  4. I’ve never understood that whole sovereign nation thing.  If they are a sovereign nation what are we doing funding anything on the reservation.  Conversely if they are american citizens, why do they get rights that no one else can have, based entirely on their race.  (Like the right to own incredibily lucritive casinos)  I’ve never been able to figure out why that doesn’t run afoul of every discrimination test.

Sure seems they get to pick and choose the better of both worlds.
