Permits to Shoot Problem Wolves Valid Starting Friday

Good.

The DNR plans to send letters out today to about 100 landowners who have had problems with wolves killing livestock telling them that they can obtain permits to hunt wolves on their property. The permits will be valid beginning Friday.

Starting the same day, people also will be allowed to shoot a wolf in the act of attacking personal property without a permit.

Lest you think this is a small issue, take a look at this picture a reader sent me.

That’s one big critter. Here’s some info on it:

NE1/4, SE1/4, Sec 22, T27N-R13E, Shawano Co.
It was found dead in the Hwy G turn lane on Hwy 29 just SE of Tilleda
Adult male wolf hit by car on Friday, Dec 16, 2011 in the afternoon.
Co Hwy Dept personnel reported that it had been seen with 3 other wolves.

  1. That wolf looks so majestic it is a shame it is lying dead in the back of a pickup truck.

  2. The driver should have left it in the road after it was hit by a car? Um, okay. I’m sure it would look even more majestic after a few 18-wheelers ran it over and rodents started chewing on it.

Did that strike anyone else as strange? So prior to this, if a wolf was attacking your livestock or pets, your options were to protect them and pay a hefty fine or perhaps you could get the DNR on the phone & request a permit?

  4. Locke - Prior to the delisting, you couldn’t even make that call to request a permit.  National animal rights have been blocking the state’s ability to delist the wolf for several years.  So yea, your option was to either sit there and allow the wolf to maim/kill your pet, or pay a huge fine for firing at the wolf.

And Bret, let me know how “majestic” it is when one these creatures wanders into your backyard and thrashes and kills your dog.

  5. Mr. PP, it is a majestic animal. That was Bret’s point. I didn’t see anything else in that statement. I’m glad that farmers and the rest will be allowed to protect their cattle and pets, but the wolf is a magnificent animal. I was heading west on 21 down the hill past Coloma, and 3 deer followed by 5 wolves crossed in front of me. What a sight. Then, there are the 4 black bears I’ve seen dead on the roadside over the last 4 years. 2 on hwy 29 and 2 on 90/94.

  6. Billiam, I believe the “...it is a shame it is lying dead in the back of a pickup truck.” might lead one to believe that Bret does not approve of the topic of this post. If I am wrong Bret, correct me please. Too often I have seen people that are either outsiders or visiters and they have these ideas of beautiful sights and magestic animals and while they do not carry the price for these they are happy to tell those of us who do what we can or can’t do. There is a reason wolves were hunted out in this state and the fact that some tree hugger out in cali or dc can tell a farmer that while we feel for you losing your livestock, you will have to just accept it because we want to spend billions to try to bring back a high tier predator that is pretty.

  7. They need to update those wolf license plates and add a cross-hair.

  8. Maybe we should bring back sabertooths too. They are beautiful. I’m sure people won’t mind dying to keep such a beautiful animal around.
