What are your thoughts?
Me? I thought it was great. And when I saw Paul Ryan in the crowd, I instantly thought:
Palin/Ryan ‘12
Just kidding. Well, that really was my first thought, but it might not be the best ticket. A hot one, though.
And Owen just called from Minneapolis. He asked what I thought of the speech. I said, “Honey, I might have to leave you for Sarah Palin.” He replied, “I might have to do the same.”
The liberal major media overplayed their hand the last 72-hours. And in doing so, made expectations much lower which wasn’t their intent. In the meantime Palin hit a home run out of the park.
I’ll be cynical about Palin sometime in the future. But this is the first “politician” that I’ve actually felt was a real person and I could identify with.
Wow a partisan hack says it was a homerun. A monkey could have just sat on stage and scratched its nuts and you’d call it a home run.
I saw the whole speech and I thought it was excellent. No worries that she will not be able to stand up to Biden. I love the comparison of a VP candidate who has more experience than the Presidental candidate on the other ticket.
It’s going to be a very interesting 2 months. If you want a great laugh - read the democratic response to the speech.
Too bad she lied multiple times on stage.
I thought the speech was great! It took courage for her daughter to come on state after all the press bashing her, and it showed real class for her boyfriend (fiance?) to also appear with her.
Game On!!!!
Where can I get a “Pitbull in Lipstick” bumper sticker?
Steve-O
Too bad you can’t list any of them…?
“Honey, I might have to leave you for Sarah Palin.”
Glad to know I’m not the only woman who has put her man on notice. ![]()
Wow a partisan hack says it was a homerun. A monkey could have just sat on stage and scratched its nuts and you’d call it a home run.
And the douche baggery continues.
Fear brings out your best, huh ATV?
Tosa, still thinks she should not be running for VP because she has a young child. Maybe that monkey on stage resides in ‘Tosa
What are your thoughts?
Can we get Governor Palin to move here and run for governor?
Interesting - the blogs I read whose authors are on right and centrist loved the speech. A guy I know in SF who is liberal (in the thoughtful non-screechy way) called it a fine speech full of lies.
I was glad I didn’t read any of the excerpts before she delivered the speech. But I thank you for posting it so I can isolate the zingers for future use.
It was a fine VP speech, well delivered and well-crafted. It did what it’s supposed to do, which is make you accept the presidential candidate of that Party is you are still open to the call.
But her task was greater, which was to demonstrate that she is qualified for the spot on the ticket McCain gave her. She made that perfectly clear over and over to anyone with an open mind and a sense of fairness.
And in the process she made it clear why Barack Obama would probably not have been Hillary Clinton’s VP choice, since he lacks Palin’s substantive qualifications.
Still, the speech was of course not perfect. The opening reaction was electrifying and great fun, and the crowd energy lasted well into her speech. But despite the zingers, the energy began to sag and she found it difficult to re-energize the crowd. Fortunately for her, these experienced pols knew how to do that for themselves as the telegraphed conclusion came near. That made for a fun, if no longer electrifying, ending.
It’s also clear to anyone with eyes and a brain that her youngest daughter Piper is a ‘natural’ at politics. The one who knew it was time to give a standing ovation, the one who knew it was time for the family to stand up and accept the crowd’s applause, the one who knew when to smile at the camera and the only one to wave to the crowd from the stage. She’s going to be trouble for any opponent in the future ...
I think the speech was very presidential. having said that the Presidential Candidate is likely to be a let down tomorrow night. There was a fair selection of distortions (lies) but this is politics baby.
I thought it was refreshing honestly… it gave me a blip of hope…
If you would have seen Paul Ryan rudely cut through to the front of long security lines and ignore the law enforcement official who was holding the line back to prevent congestion at the metal detectors, you would be slightly less impressed with him.
She did a great job and is off to an excellent start. She will be formidable.
I expect that many Conservatives that were lukewarm are now much more fired up about this ticket. Money has been rolling in.
I’ll be interested to see what kind of effect on polling this has.
Biden better come to the debate wearing a hardhat and cup.
I agree it was great!
Fuzz,
I’d have to get emotional about this for my post to be based on fear. Her speech was amusing. Sarcastic and not very presidential. Red meat to the base, and that’s about it.
She lied about telling Washington “thanks but no thanks” to the Bridge to Nowhere. If you’re saying “no thanks” and you mean it, you generally return the money that comes with the project.
Great speech, delivered well.
Now a couple of questions for you.
—What has McCain done to stand up for reform?
—Palin and others talked about McCain’s list of accomplishments in the Senate. OK, there’s a list. What’s on it?

She was fantastic and she got better as the speech went on. No doubt the best speaker so far…..hard to top Fred but she did. Sorry.
I kept thinking of Barack’s term for his own grandmother calling her a “typical white person”. First off if he stereotypes his own family how does he see me? But I would like a bumper sticker that says Sarah Palin…Not your typical white woman.
But I would like a bumper sticker that says Sarah Palin…Not your typical white woman.
Atypical in her specific accomplishments - not many people are elected to the office of governor. I think it takes nothing from her accomplishments to note that she’s typical of the women I know.
I think you can use this speech as a litmus test. If a liberal commentor cannot acknowledge that this was a great speech (even if they need to qualify that by saying that either they don’t agree with any of her views, or that they believe that she misrepresented the facts), there is really no point in continuing to discuss politics with that person. I am amazed that Keith appears to have passed this test and AnotherTosaVoter has not.
AnotherTosaVoter, why did you come to this post? To compare that speech to a “monkey scratching its nuts” and insult Wendy? Please continue to act in this manner - I’m sure if more Obama supporters take your tone, and continue to underestimate Palin’s effect on the voters, it will really help to convince the hicks and rubes to vote for Obama. /sarcasm
Don’t get me wrong. She misrepresented the facts more than any speech I’ve ever heard. But as the Times of London said, “as a former newsreader, she had no trouble reading the teleprompter.”
This list? What a joke. After voting down one veteran bill after another the list on this topic is mainly good intentions. You know where that leads us to. As far as technology, some tax cuts and content blocking measures.
You know I do open and read links.
McCain gets a free pass from the media. All this lauding of his record when there should be some real digging into where the real substance is. So far none really exists.
As far as McCain-Feingold, don’t worry boys. He’s not following his own bill.
When I hear the term “the base” when it comes to the Republican party, we should take it literally.
Keeth -
What’s it like being so much smarter than everyone else?
Because, I’m curious: what about McCain-Feingold is he not following?
Even better, please let us know what veteran’s bills he didn’t support and then - in what should be easy for a man of your keen intellect - let us all know if there was something in those bills that would cause a reasonable person to not support them. Riders like unrelated spending? Withdrawal dates for Iraq? Post Offices named after Senators? Highway funds for West Virginia.
Enlighten us.
You know what… this goes for all candidates. If you don’t want your family (children) to be part of the public eye, THEN STOP USING THEM IN PUBLIC APPEARANCES! Don’t drag them out at the end of speeches.
I hate that.
McCain gets a free pass from the media. All this lauding of his record when there should be some real digging into where the real substance is. So far none really exists.
Really? It seems like McCain does more than just vote “present,” unlike your candidate. Obama must be Kenyan for “empty suit.”
f you don’t want your family (children) to be part of the public eye, THEN STOP USING THEM IN PUBLIC APPEARANCES!
I can see it now ...
Reporter: Governor Palin, why don’t you bring your children or your husband on the campaign trail - are you ashamed of them? Are you hiding something?
DailyKos: Sarah Palin ate her children in some kind of weird Pentecostal misunderstanding of the body and blood Xtian ritual! That’s why we don’t see them! Can we afford a ritual cannibal for vice president!?
Yeah - that would work real well.
What we got to see last night were a pack of classless hacks spewing venom.
The Democrats of course took after the Republicans but they did it in with a level of respect. Did ya notice?
Of course you didn’t. You all are so sensitive and any level of criticism hurts your little feelings.

But as the Times of London said, “as a former newsreader, she had no trouble reading the teleprompter.”
Seriously? This is what you’ve got as criticism? That in and of itself is proof she did a great job.
There isn’t a speech thats been given at either convention that didn’t come off of the teleprompter… what in the world is the significance of pointing out this one did?
Empty criticism like that proves you’ve got nothing of substance. Trivial and pathetic.
I also thought it was interesting… Maybe it was just an occurance, maybe intentional that NBC had a shot coming from over her shoulder showing the words on the teleprompter. I admit I didn’t watch the DNC convention wall to wall, but I wonder if that was intentional or not. An attempt to take away from her delivery.
The Democrats of course took after the Republicans but they did it in with a level of respect. Did ya notice?
Don’t let the fact that the DNC occured BEFORE the RNC distort your reality Keith.
What we got to see last night were a pack of classless hacks spewing venom.

Keith… There is a part of intelligent thought that dictates that you really need to remove yourself from a situation in your mind in order to be more objective about it. We as humans get very emotionally connected to certain things and it really warps our perspective. Its then that we need to step back and consider our biases and how those are affecting our perspective.
Kinda like when you watch a sporting event and “your team” gets a bad call from the ref and you are up in arms, but yet you don’t really seem to notice when a bad call goes against the other team.
The democrats came after the republicans with the same “venom” (your words not mine) as the republicans did.
If you ask me, it was pretty tit for tat. After watching the democratic convention last week, I thought “wow, all they did was rip on McCain” and I expected that the republicans might counter that by taking a ‘higher’ road. Not that fighting back wouldn’t be aprapos, but i just thought they might take a different strategy.
After watching Sarahs speech last night, I thought “nope, they fired back”
And how ironic for you to say:
What we got to see last night were a pack of classless hacks spewing venom.
Of course you didn’t. You all are so sensitive and any level of criticism hurts your little feelings.
Whose feelings are hurt here? Who’s bent out of shape?
Seriously Keith. This is all a matter of perspective. Why don’t you find some yourself and recognize its just tit for tat.
The republicans aren’t doing anything the democrats didn’t do. The only difference is your perspective.
Keith -
You still researching those veteran’s bills for me?
I think its funny how quickly the headlines change from yesterday morning to today:
Right now on MSNBC
Can McCain live up to Palin’s performance?
First Read: Governor’s speech shows that the GOP has a new star. But her boss now has to ensure he is not overshadowed.
So yesterday its all about is she qualified, can you do it, she needs to hit a home run…
Today “is she going to overshadow McCain”
News media… always scratching for an angle. lol
Hurt feelings? Not a bit. I find this whole process tedious at times, fun and entertaining at other times, but not insulting. We’re all adults.
I do fail to understand why the press is so quick to point to Palin’s use of sarcasm in her speech, as if there is something wrong with that. I love it, and I can appreciate it even from an opponent if it’s timely or on-point. Most of her comments were. What, you don’t like being reminded that Obama has never accomplished anything of substance? That he avoids voting on things but is happy to comment about them? Come on. He had those remarks (and many more) coming. Just because you choose to be an ostrich about things doesn’t mean it’s classless or disrespectful to call out the Democratic candidate for being glib as a matter of routine.
Really, I find it more entertaining to see what impact a LIKABLE and qualified female candidate can have. What a contrast to pantsuit Hillary, almost a WINO, whose sole accomplishments flow from being married to Bill, which then got her elected senator of a state she had nothing to do with. I recall watching Hillary TRY to paint herself as in-touch with average people out there - pretending to be someone who understands firearms ownership, or religious conviction, or anything else. She only got as far as she did with that approach because compared to celebrity-Obama (the political equivalent of Paris Hilton), she WAS in touch with regular folks. But it was still laughable. Now here comes a competent, articulate female who really IS like the voters out there! I think lots of women voters out there who had to force themselves to identify with Hillary are breathing a sigh of relief. Yes, Virginia, it IS possible to be tough and firm and yet not bitchy.
No matter what happens, I think Hillary’s star just started to set a lot faster. And not a moment too soon!
I loved the fact that she took obama over her knee so to speak and gave him a spanking
I loved the fact that she took obama over her knee so to speak and gave him a spanking
Can I be next? COUGARS!
Keith,
“The Democrats of course took after the Republicans but they did it in with a level of respect. Did ya notice? “
No I didnt, and I watched Keith and Chris, and their minions until about 2AM.. Come on your going to sit there and say that these 2 guys dont have an agenda.
I would say that your impression of them using a level of respect was actually them not knowing what to do. Lots of ah, ah, ah, ah…
Liberals arnt used to being spanked on national television.
But they better get used to it.
REL,
I think the title of the thread answers your question as to why I came here.
As far as partisan hacks liking whatever is on stage, I felt the same way last week. Biden or Obama speak and lo and behold every leftwing hack says they were the greatest speeches ever. Well duh. S/he just played to your emotional needs to have your idiotic political views validated, how am I supposed to think you’d react?
I’m sorry but I cannot agree that it was a great speech. As an unknown she had an opportunity to introduce herself as a competent, reform-minded Governor. Instead she used it entirely to engage in partisan hackery. She may have succeeded in shoring up the 30-40% of America that would never have voted for Obama anyway, but she failed (or I hope she failed) to convince independents like me that she’s interested in good governance and getting things done. She chose to continue her lie about the Bridge to Nowhere even though she’s been photographed wearing a t-shirt supporting it and last I heard she hasn’t given the money back, a key component one would think of saying “no thanks” if one is truly a champion of fiscal conservatism.
But as usual all the partisan hacks have all kinds of reasons why “it’s not really lying” (which all boil down to having the right letter after her name) and the usual defense mechanisms, “yeah but Clinton…”
Her sarcastic, juvenile tone and rhetoric may have gotten all the partisans’ panties wet and put them into full emo mode, but to me she sounded like a cross between Al Gore in his disastrous first debate in 2000 and that raving whacko Zell Miller, just in a prettier package.
This is quickly turning into our 20th straight election between Giant Douche and Turd Sandwich. Political parties serve no purpose other than to stroke their followers emotional needs to belong, and to identify and fight against the “other”.
So yes, if and when a Conservative gives a “good” speech (and last night’s were all terrible, especially Rudy who managed to go off script, go long, and cause several stations to switch away from Palin to their 10 PM news - bravo you dumbass), I’ll be the first to let you know.
Wow, thanks ATV, as a full-blown conservative myself I’ve been agonizing over this speech. Although I have three degrees and 20-plus years of having to earn my own living, I just am not capable of discerning the quality of Palin’s speech. And here I thought both Rudy G. and Palin did pretty good jobs. After all, it seemed that they discussed Palin’s and McCain’s qualifications, drew distinctions between them and the Obama camp, and energized the delegates in attendance. But I see now that I was mistaken. Whew! Thanks for setting me straight.
So yeah, you’ll just keep tabs on all the people giving speeches from here on out for us, okay? And you be sure and let us know when it’s time for us to appreciate a really “good” conservative speech. Thanks in advance.
Really ATV,
Can you give us a sample of a speech you have given in front of anyone that doesn’t wear a tin hat?
Anything..
You’d fit right in at MSNBC, with the land of the giant ego’s..
Really. What do you look like. You just have to be a little better looking than Chris Matthew, but not better than Keith.
Can you post a picture and resume of yourself here.
Seriously, are you related to Scott, or Lefty, or maybe Gloria Steinem..
LOL. Thanks for proving my points, and Pavlov’s theories.
Oh and by the way, McCain’s speech was excellent. A lof what I saw, and supported enthusiastically and financially, in 2000.
It’s just too bad he’s yoked to what happened the previous eight years and the previous night.
BTW the first two responses, nay the entire blog, have yet to answer the question, “isn’t returning the money a key part of saying thanks but no thanks to a federal earmark?”
But, whatever.
