It wasn’t my imagination.

Hunters killed 22% fewer deer during the opening weekend of the nine-day gun deer season, the Department of Natural Resources reported today.

  1. You gonna stick with the story you told Wendy and us about “driving deer”?

  2. That’s because the can of whoopass known as Ms. Jones has not yet been unleashed.

  4. I’d be intereseted in knowing if the number of hunters is down from last year.  Is it because of the economy, people moving out of Wisconsin or whatever reason.  Or could be people are poor shots?

  5. My guess is that the deer herd is down because of last years winter was brutal on the deer.
very cold and not much food.

  6. Dan - permits were up - so there should have been more hunters - unless they stayed home. There weren’t very many hunters on the public lands around us. I suspect the very cold weather on opening morning didn’t help.

Everyone I spoke with said they didn’t see many deer and that was also my experience. Whether this was repeated throughout Wisconsin I don’t know.

I think the herd is down due to the very bad winter, plus the EAB zones are keeping down the number of does.

  7. So far the two of us have gotten four deer.  There are lots of them out there, you just need more time in the woods.  I’ve got one hanging in the garage that needs to get butchered.  Got to use a gun down south here where I hunt.  Nice to be able to place the cross hairs on that deer and take it down at two hundreds yards.
