Only Humans and Armadillos Get Leprosy

Learn something every day.

While leprosy is infectious, it is relatively hard to catch, requiring prolonged association with someone who has the disease. It has only one other animal host, the armadillo.

That’s why they run over them in Texas.

  1. Know what you mean, Owen. I lived in Dallas for 12 years, but I didn’t see my first live armadillo until 5 years had passed. Prior to that, I always assumed they were born dead on the side of the road.

  2. I cannot possibly imagine running over an Armadillo.  Noise, racket, mayhem, undercarriage damage.

  3. Actually, ‘dillos will spring about 2 feet straight up when startled, placing them at grill height (car grill, not BBQ). If they would stay crouched on the pavement the car would probably pass right over them. BTW, another name for ‘dillos: possum on the half-shell.
