On Imus

I don’t care.  A radio host that I never listened to was canned for saying something stupid and all of the posturing, racism, and double standards are utterly obvious.

Whatever.

  2. Well, the liberals ate one of their own.  They probably opened a big can of worms they weren’t expecting, especially now that people are now concentrating on rap and/or hip hop music and urban comedians.

  3. I think this is big news in two fronts:

    a) Liberals did finally eat one of their own as Dan said…..Sure Imus occasionaly said some conservative things…..but most of the time he’d just have the liberal elite media on his show to have them act superior….

Of course maybe the liberals never trusted Imus, so they felt he needed to go….

    b) This will open up the PC debate and backfire, as I think a number of people who have been afraid of saying non-PC things will finally just open up….

  4. Here is a story from a reporter who actually gets it.

  5. Imus has been saying this type of stuff for years, getting away with it, and having all the drive by reporters and liberal politicians fawn all over him to get on his show.  That they threw him under the bus is no surprise after all they will eat their own if it serves their purpose.
What worries me about this whole mess is who are they going to go after next.  Rush, Behling, Charlie, Sean, Savage, etc.  I feel this is only the beginning and they smell blood in the water.

  6. I think the only interesting aspect of all this is the liberals threw him under the bus and agreed that advertisers should boycott him, etc., etc.

Well, remember Natalie Mains of the Dixie Chicks?  Conservatives were offended and boycotted her CD’s, concerts, etc. and liberals gasped, “But they were just exercising their right to free speech!” and seemed horrified that people might boycott someone based simply on what they said.

Now, I think what happened with Imus is right and good, I’m just sayin’ that it’s a touch hypocritical.

  7. I heard an interesting theory on “Savage Nation” last night.  The whole thing was a political assassination (yes, a vast left wing conspiracy) by the Hillary crew because Imus has been very critical of her over the years.

Given that this is the first time in a long time that the libs have, indeed, “eaten one of their own,” I don’t think this theory is too out of line.

  8. Maybe, just maybe a few black rappers will be thrown under the bus.  One can only hope.

  9. You guys are overthinking this. This is primarily a business issue, and the story began when the advertisers like GM and American Express pulled out. The networks that carried Imus didn’t want to alienate any more advertisers, so they made a very basic decision to fire him.

I completely agree that this brings up an interesting debate about hypocrisy and who’s allowed to say certain words, but that’s a footnote to the real story.

As for the “liberal media eating one of their own” nonsense, remember that business decisions at major media companies are made by management that’s more often Republican than Democratic.

  10. Management at major media being more often Republican!  Oh, Gordon- give me a break!  Next thing you will be saying is “Rosie” is a staunch conservative and is of sound mind, an intellectual, and going to support Fred Thompson!

  11. Sorry Gordon, I’m coming back at you again.  Let me ask you a question.  If the media management were Republican, do you really thing you would be see the crap on the MSM that is shown- and why would so much “real” news be left out that would benefit the republican viewpoint?  Please Gordon, I need insight.

  12. A lot of folks are saying it’s a business issue, because that’s easier to swallow than the simple fact that this guy was tossed under the bus even though he was a liberal himself.

And he was fired not because someone lost money, but because it looked bad.  Why did it look bad?  Because there were folks willing and waiting to make this a MUCH bigger story than it even had any right to be.

Don Imus saying something stupid and outrageous is about as newsworthy as Howard Stern or Carlos Mencia or Bill Maher, etc saying something outrageous.  It’s what they do.

So you can still say whatever you want - just don’t hurt anybody’s feelings.

  13. Dan, “liberal media eating one of their own” is a little out of touch.

If you think Imus is a liberal then that makes Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, Sykes, etc Nazis.

Gordon, what exactly is the MSM, which is owned by GE, Westinghouse, Disney not showing that would benefit the Republican viewpoint. Us winning in Iraq.

Let me remind you, the job of the news media is to show facts. If you want candy coated mountains and soda pop rivers go over to FOX ( not FACTS), Newsmax and tha aptly named Savage.

That turkey, by the way should be next. He is really inappropriate.

  14. kr, you really need to check on your mental illness and get some anger management.
I have listened to Imus and he is liberal. He has liberal views and he has a majority of liberal guests- both policital and and reporters.  He was a huge Kerry supporter.  He may look like a cowboy, but probably a Brokeback Mountain type cowboy.
I actually agree with you on Savage- he is inappropriate at times but I don’t support his firing.

  15. Dan, for many people Bush was so odious they became Kerry supporters.

As far as him being liberal forget it. Racial, sexual put down humor is never liberal.

  16. “As far as him being liberal forget it. Racial, sexual put down humor is never liberal.”
It may not be liberal, but it certainly is done by liberals all the time.  Let’s start with Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton- very liberal and very racist.  Then lets go onto rappers- not too many support Republicans, many of theri songs are racial and sexual put downs.  Shall we go on?  You may not consider it to be liberal to say those things, but it is a liberal idea not to call other liberals out who degrade people by race and sex- a very liberal idea.

  17. Let me ask you a question.  If the media management were Republican, do you really thing you would be see the crap on the MSM that is shown- and why would so much “real” news be left out that would benefit the republican viewpoint?

Ron, you’ve been led to believe that whenever the news doesn’t support your point of view it’s somehow being censored or filtered. Unfortunately the reason so much bad news is coming out of Iraq is simply because things are pretty bad. A lot of the good news is the product of imaginative PR, like John McCain saying that he could walk freely through a Baghdad market; it took the “liberal” media to point out that he was protected by 100 soldiers, three Blackhawk helicopters, two Apache helicopters and a bulletproof vest. Is that the media being liberal or pointing out the truth?

As for media leadership being Republican? At Time Warner, the world’s biggest media company. the CEO is Dick Parsons, a Republican who’s expected to enter politics. And the mayor here in New York is Michael Bloomberg, another Republican who was founded another major media company.

Drill down to the business side of any major media company and you’ll find that the people who make the business decisions are just as likely to be Republican as Democratic.

  18. Michael Bloomberg is a big time RINO- he is a liberal Democrat, especially on social issues.

  19. Okay Dan, what about Sumner Redstone, the Republican chairman of CBS Corporation? Or Rupert Murdoch, conservative CEO of News Corporation, which owns everything from Fox to MySpace to the New York Post? He’s a staunch supporter of Republicans in the U.S. and conservatives around the world.

Pretending that the “mainstream media” is entirely run by a bunch of liberals must make you feel better about ignoring the news you don’t like, but it’s unfortunately not the case.

  20. Yes, there was obviously racism in what Imus said, but that’s not the larger point.  He insulted the race and the gender of a bunch of COLLEGE basketball players who had done nothing other than lose in the national championship game.

That’s what bothers me, anyway.  We insult and make fun of women still in school who did nothing to anyone?
