Obey Loves Pork

Not only is David Obey a pompous tax-spending ass, he’s an idiot.

U.S. Rep. David Obey (D-WI), the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, helped write the bill and says he doesn’t like being asked about earmarks.

“We simply made a decision, which took about three seconds, not to have earmarks in the bill,” he says. “And with all due respect, that’s the least important question facing us on putting together this package.”

Leaving out the earmarks does mean Congress will have less control over how the money is spent. But, Obey says, “So what? This is an emergency. We’ve got to simply find a way to get this done as fast as possible and as well as possible, and that’s what we’re doing.”

That doesn’t mean Congress will be responsible if the money is spent badly, he says.

“The person who spends the money badly will be responsible. We are simply trying to build as many protections in as possible,” Obey says. “We have more oversight built into this package than any package in the history of man. If money is spent badly, we want to know about it so we can hold accountable the people who made that choice. And guess what? Regardless of what we do, there will be some stupid decisions made.”

  3. If we define earmarks as amendments, Obey is right. But the problem is pork. Earmarks did not need to be added to the “stimulus” package because the wasteful spending is already contained in the original bill. Earmarks don’t need to be added because they were there to begin with. It’s a pork bill.

    What I don’t understand is why the people in Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District stick with him.

Josh, you are rtight, why does his district suport Obey.  I lived in his district and worked and traveled in the 7th district and it is a fairly conservative district. especially when it comes to spending money.  The reason is probably is because he comes off as a nice guy in the district, he brings back the pork and he is an incumbant.

  5. Obey is a nice guy unless you disagree with him. He is rude to Republicans, even though his facial twitch seems better controlled by medication.

    He still seems miffed by my running on a shoe-string against him in 1984, the highest percentage against him until Scott West’s first run. Huge Dem margins in Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point and Superior mean that Obey will have the seat until he dies or retires.

    I doubt Congress ever learns any lessons, and I suspect that Obey is clueless or a liar.

  7. Unfortunately, the entire nation must suffer when citizens continue to re-elect whack-jobs like Dave Obey, Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, John Dingell and Charlie Rangel.

    These people have lost touch with the real America and are on a power trip.
