Obama’s Tail

I guess the flag wasn’t good enough.

As part of a month-long aircraft makeover, a painted American flag was removed from the tail of Sen. Barack Obama’s official campaign airplane and was replaced with the presidential candidate’s trademark “O” symbol.

The refurbished 757 was unveiled to members of the news media today, 41 of whom boarded the craft and took off to meet Obama in Amman, Jordan, where the presidential candidate will stop as part of a Middle Eastern and European tour.

Obama traveled to the Mideast earlier this week on board a separate airplane.

Fox News blogger Bonny Kapp, traveling on Obama’s new airplane, reported:

“The North American jet that flew Obama and his traveling crew around for much of the primary season was refurbished with new seats and power for each passenger a must on the campaign trail. And the plane that once had an American flag on its tail now sports the Obama ‘O.’”

Hat tip May the Swartz Be With You.

  1. Do we have something of substance to talk about, or is this all you’ve got?

  3. Sure… Obama wants to surrender in Iraq, have socialized medicine, increase taxes, and quash gun rights.  But beyond all of that, he prefers an “O” on his plane’s ass instead of an American Flag.

  4. Oh, and he also doesn’t know what Senate committees he’s on.

  5. This is an item worth a blog post?

Your right to complain about elections not being about important issues is forever revoked.

  6. One has to understand the Bush years has made the American flag a symbol of war and conquest.  Many in the world no longer see the high ideals that the flag once represented.  That is a shame,  There are decades of repair in store for us.  Someday again others may see the flag in foreign lands and not feel like we are bullies.  But that is not the case today,

  7. The point here is that he is a candidate for the President of the UNITED STATES.  This, to me, shows that once again he does not care about this country, just his own personal agenda - supreme ruler of the world.  It is an insult to
Americans.  Forgive me for being idealistic I always thought that the POS was to put the test interests of our cfountry first.

  9. I don’t have any particular love for Obama, but seriously, who the hell cares what he paints on his plane?  Presidential campaigns are all about marketing and branding anyway.

There’s nothing more nauseating that watching politicians constantly drape themselves in the flag - flag decals, flag pins, blah blah blah.  Just tell me what you’ve done in the past and what you plan to do in the future.  I don’t really care if you wear a flag pin or where you put your hands during the pledge.  There are more important things to discuss.

  10. Funny - the world sees us as a “bully” but foreign nations (most notably Frace) have elected people to power who are friendly toward America.

I’m sure they don’t see our flag as a symbol of bullying when our troops are there helping clean up after an earthquake or a tsunami or some other disaster.

Obama’s arrogance knows no bounds.  He’s denied the flag several times, remade the presidental seal (which is illegal, by the way) and is now using his slogan and logo on government planes which traditionally bear the flag of our nation (which every other country has, and uses, without worrying about world opinion).

  11. Uh, except for the fact that the government doesn’t own that plane and never did.  The Obama campaign is leasing it from American Airlines.

But why bother with the facts when you can trot out a bunch of symbols and imply that someone isn’t patriotic because they don’t embrace them as whorishly as you?  You’re as bad as those Christians that try to make some big public spectacle of their faith to prove to the world how much they love God.

I’ll take Matthew 6:5-8 for the win.

  14. You’re seriously wasting time on this? Come on, Owen, your blog is bettern than complaining about an “O” being stuck on Obama’s plane. Focus on the stuff that really does matter, like the items you mention in your comment above.

  16. The story isn’t the tail of the plane, Owen.  The story is yet another self righteous politician jet-setting around the globe telling me how I’m going to have to sacrifice.

  17. I prefer to see my self-righteous politicians wrap themselves in the flag, especially and American made flag, telling our soldiers they will have to sacrifice, probably for another 100 years.

    LOL

  18. But then again, that particular politician isn’t asking anyone to perform any unpaid act (soldiers are paid, and they volunteer) nor is he asking anyone to do anything he himself didn’t do, which defeats the comparison.

And thanks for reminding me about more tax dollars going down the toilet.

And Haliburton is certainly getting paid, and OH! what a sacrifice!

Cheney & company are laughing so loud they look like they’re crying all the way to the bank.

  20. The story isn’t that Obama replaced the flag on his plane with his logo.  Really, who cares?

The story is that he has a logo in the first place.  It’s that he’s changing the way presidential races are run with a slick marketing campaign, the likes of which has never been seen in politics.  Every time he does something that a “normal” candidate wouldn’t do, he elevates himself above the drudgery of politics, and the Obama brand (yes, it is a brand) solidifies in the voters’ collective minds.

Presidential races are not about policies or issues.  They’re about marketing.  Just like everything else.  Obama has been able to market himself as a candidate that is different in almost every conceivable way than any other serious candidate in history.  In marketing, different is good.

Of course it doesn’t hurt that he has gobs of money and the might of the media behind him.  But even if he didn’t, his brand would still be almost as effective, if not more so.

I’m not saying I like it or it’s good for the country, though as a marketer, I have to admire it.

I am saying that unless McCain gets innovative in a hurry, he will be trounced.

  21. Everything isn’t about marketing.  Actually, almost nothing is about marketing.

Eventually one has to deliver the goods.    And almost inevitably those who think everything is about marketing fail to deliver the goods.

Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on July 24, 2008 at 1558 hrs

  22. Yes, having a solid “product” and delivering the goods is important if you want your customers to like you and tell their friends how great you are.

But with an election, everyone makes their “purchase” decision at the same time, so by the time he fails do deliver the goods, the sale is over.  No returns.  No exchanges.

Now, he’ll have to deal with dissatisfied customers to get re-elected, but he’ll have a few years before he has to cross that bridge.

  23. That might be true otto if the campaign began today.    The campaign, however, began a year ago, and now the candidates are being asked to deliver more than marketing.    Obama is being protected by the MSM from having to deliver any goods, but the electorate, like any group of people, tires of sales pitches and wants more substance.    By November, no one wants to be sold anything.  McCain has adopted the strategy of “shut up and let your opposition fail”.    It has allowed him to close a polling gap and may allow him to win an election.  McCain has every historical weakness a presidential candidate could have and yet remains close.
