Obama’s Cool Detachment

Indeed.

After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation called for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective.

But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a “shout-out” to “Dr. Joe Medicine Crow—that Congressional Medal of Honor winner.”  Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. Who is advising him?

Anyone at home aware of the major news story of the previous hours had to have been stunned. An incident like this requires a scrapping of the early light banter. The president should apologize for the tone of his remarks, explain what has happened, express sympathy for those slain and appeal for calm and patience until all the facts are in. That’s the least that should occur.

His second attempt wasn’t much better.  After some appropriate, if terse, remarks, he prattled on about legislation that he was signing.  Then he refused to take any questions despite the event being called a “press conference.”

  3. There are some questions all over the place as to the accuracy of the ” Congressional Medal of Honor” winner statement, which is a military award.  There are also “Presidential Medal of Freedom” & “Congressional Gold Medals” that are bestowed upon civilians, and that might be what Dr. Joe Medicine Crow received.

    http://www.cmohs.org/

The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. Generally presented to its recipient by the President of the United States of America in the name of Congress, it is often called the Congressional Medal of Honor

And furthermore, Obama is getting ripped for treating the Medal of Honor award as something that is “won” - it is something that is “earned”.

  4. Joe Medicine Crow received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama on August 12, 2009, and not the Congressional Medal of Honor.

    *sigh*

  5. And then he ready My Pet Goat to some school kids.

Seriously, people.  Fault the man for something real, not imagined, trumped up slights.

  6. You want something real? How about the soliders dying in Afganistan while he sits on his *ss about whether or not we are going to add more troops or get out?

People are dying over there needlessly. Either pull out or send in the proper amount of troops to get the job done. I don’t know how he can sleep at night while leaving our armed forces stuck in the lurch. He’s had all the data for weeks. It just doesn’t take that long to do something.

The man has zero respect for the people who put their lives on the line for our freedom - and that is sad coming from POTUS.

  8. Scott makes an excellent point about liberal double standards.  Obama’s perceived faults should be forgotten.  Bush’s perceived faults, keep bringing them up eight years later.

Obama showed no respect for the victims of Ft. Hood.  Bush showed nothing but respect for the victims of 9/11.

  9. Heh.  I knew I could get you guys’ goat with that one.  You’re too funny.  The way you take one ambiguous moment and turn it into an ironclad certainty that that man is satan incarnate is just entirely too predictable.

Wait!  Obama farted on veteran’s day!  He hates America!

    Hilarious smile

  10. How do you even begin to equate what took place at Fort Hood with 9/11?  I mean, really?

  12. Too me his “cool detachment” with which he watches the healthcare debacle (i.e. the worst bill of the last 75 years) go down is even more disconcerting. Now THAT’S the proof he hates America…
