Obama’s Control

Yes, Obama has a lot of control over what actually gets cut. Will he use the opportunity to advance his politics or to benefit the American people. Take a guess…

As head of the executive branch, and as the man who dominates media coverage, President Barack Obama has a strong and unique advantage over his Republican foes: he’s got the power to control both the practical details and the theatrics of the ongoing sequestration debate.

He can design the spectacle in a way that could inflict political embarrassment and damage on Republicans, with the goal being to pressure them to agree to another round of tax increases.

Those hikes would be part of a deal to avert the spending cuts mandated by the Budget Control Act, which Congress passed and Obama signed into law in 2011 as part an agreement to raise the government’s borrowing limit.

RELATED: GOP could pay political price on sequester

As part of that sequestration plan, $1.2 trillion in federal spending will be cut over 10 years, totaling $44 billion for the period beginning March 1 and ending in October.

Also recognize that $44 billion, while a lot of money, is a pittance when compared to the federal budget. We just spent more than that on Sandy relief.

  1. Read the polls.

The American people support his agenda. He is talking to them, not the Republicans

Until that changes, he can ignore them and you.

  2. You truly believe the polls? You must also believe that the NRA members don’t suport the NRA agenda, And most gun owners want the federal goverment telling them what kind of guns they need. That there is no inflation and Michelle has cured childhood obesity. Polls can say anything you want. I just took a poll of the peolpe I work with and 100% think Obama should be in jail.

  3. Sequestration is not a budget cut, it is a reduction in the built-in budget increase.  Yes, A REDUCTION IN THE INCREASE!

  4. I think we spent 44 billion while I wrote this comment.  We print an extra 40 billion a month now and that doesn’t dent the debt.  Steep spending cuts?  What a ridiculous belief the lib media spews.  And there is Mr Maley saying that the American people don’t want those ‘steep’ cuts?  That only proves how stupid and gullible the american public is Mark.  Mark Maley, if your wife/girlfriend/significant other starts buying 5 carats of diamonds a week in jewelry and tells you; We can afford it.  I wonder if you just stop asking questions and believe it.  No?  What if she paid CBS news $5000 dollars to report that the Maleys can afford 10-20k a week in jewelry. Or maybe a poll of his/her friends.  Yes, surely that would convince you that your household can afford that expemditure in jewelry per week.  Case closed and you sleep well.

It amazes me that, though many libs can say the words ‘the american gov’t spends too much’, virtually every fight for any decrease whatsoever is no-no-no and every increase yes-yes-yes.  As if there is no correlation between those topics.  I would never characterize a decrease in increases a cut, much less a scare the people phrase like ‘steep spending cut’.  I will note that most Republicans are not far behind.  They are not interested in common sense cuts if those receiving the cuts are their donors.

It boggles my mind how gullible 99% of Dems, Reps and libs are.  If not for drinking the undiluted kool-aid, then for falling for the line about how untouchable either party is and if you don’t belong to one of them, you will be wasting your voice.  It is only that way because you believe the pols/MSM and yes political PACs who tell you that.
