Obama To Give Specifics of Health Care Overhaul… Months After He Demanded Passage

You know what ticks me off about this?

Looking to rescue his signature domestic policy initiative with a prime-time address to Congress on Wednesday, President Obama for the first time is poised to “draw some lines in the sand” over the size and shape of legislation to remake the nation’s health-care system, top advisers said Sunday.

Until now, Obama has resisted taking firm positions on specific elements of a broad health-care bill, instead expressing openness to many ideas. But the approach has left lawmakers divided over contentious elements, such as how to rein in costs. And with a growing chorus in favor of a slower, less ambitious approach, Obama is inching toward a proposal that would bear his name and carry the political risks of sponsorship.

Remember that President Obama was pushing hard - demanding - that the Congress pass health care reform before the August recess.  And now… NOW… he wants to give us specifics?  It reminds me of the stimulus bill that had to be passed now… NOW… NOW... or else Western Civilization would come crumbling down around us.

Obama seems far more interested in passing something, anything, with a label resembling something about “health care reform.”  Details are for those of us who will have to live under the new system to deal with.

  1. Okay, I admit that I tend to be a bit of a detail person to the annoyance of others but,I could never find the line that separates Obama’s definition of bailout and stimulus.

And now I can’t find a line between reform and regulation.  If you want to put new regulation on the health industry just frickin do that.  Say it , debate it and do it.  But calling it reform gives detail people like me the idea that things that are wrong will improve.

  3. I do agree that Obama is just itching to get something passed…anything that has his name on it.  I think we need a lot more debate and discussion on something that will impact our lives and deaths for that matter.

It’s tough to just walk in the door and pass a bill that no one knows anything about.  It’s way to complicated to just vote and pass.

He has four years so what’s the rush?  Let’s think this through.

  4. I get that Obama was perhaps trying to avoid the issues that sank the Clinton administration’s health care efforts in ‘93 and ‘94, but one would be hard-pressed to argue that his laissez-faire approach of letting Congress figure it out has worked any better.

He should’ve spared everyone the months of preliminary wrangling, did his homework, and staked his claim on a proposal when he had his ducks lined up.  Leaving the details to a Congress with a 30% approval rating is an invitation to failure.  There are too many competing political interests in that body and with the absence of Sen. Kennedy, nobody has any type of claim to political clout with the public.  Nobody cares what Henry Waxman or Max Baucus thinks about this crap, and Obama should’ve recognized that months ago.  The whole thing has turned into a proxy war conducted by lobbyists - just like everything else that Congress touches.

Obama will get something on his desk in the next few months, but it’s his own fault that he let Congress drag him into the weeds on this issue.  He should’ve been leading instead of following.

  5. I try to sift through the crap and see where the money is coming from and where it is going. Or in this case who is paying and who is not.  AND how do those who do not pay still benefit.

From what I can understand they are just talking about a cost shift. Instead of my employer paying an insurance company he will pay the government.  I will also pay the government for my portion.  Then the government will become my insurance company and use my money to pay for me and also for all the currently unisured.  IF they allow us to opt out of the govt system then they dont get our money and the whole thing colapses.

The big thing they cant seem to figure out is how to keep employers from dumping all their current benefit plans in anticiaption of a federal freebie again screwing the funding formula.

The thing I can’t figure out is how my currently excellent health care and health insurance coverage will not be downgraded in order to provide healthcare to those who either can’t or don’t have it.  And its not just a cost thing to me. I pay taxes so that others can go to school, drive on great roads, visit parks, have clean drinking water and so on.  So I know I will have to pay more to provide health care to those who dont have it.  But I want my same quality and quantity.

I want what I have for everyone not just myself.  But I dont want my health to suffer because of it.  If thats selfish then so be it.
