Obama Spins the Auto Industry

In Obama’s weekly address he was touting the American auto industry and the bailout and said:

Since GM and Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy, our auto industry has added 55,000 jobs…

I don’t think so.  First off, GM emerged from bankruptcy scarcely three weeks ago.  It’s hard to even find job numbers for that period of time.

Second, the term “auto industry,” as used by the federal government, includes Ford, which did not take the bailout, and all other ancillary businesses including manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, and other services, like repair and maintenance.  Does Obama’s 55,000 include that?

I am very dubious of a number like that thrown out with little definition and with only three weeks to measure.

  1. A few random thoughts…

Have they truly added new jobs or just recalled those laid off.

I also wonder if those have been offset by all the jobs lost at those closed dealerships.

There is also no mention of how much each one of those jobs has cost us with the subsidies for programs like the Volt money pit and the future subsidies on each one sold.

  2. Wow, one valid comment and four spams.  Hope you and Jed can find a solution to this soon!

With the way this administration has ‘counted’ things, I’m not trusting the 55K number either. hmmm

  3. You know what I find truly shocking?  The defense of this administration has dropped through the floor.  Not just here (where it has plummeted), but everywhere.  There’s still the diehard toolbags who can’t see anything wrong, but for the most part, there’s a ringing silence that’s growing.
