Obama Printing German Fliers

Just in case you thought Obama was already the President on a foreign tour, he’s printed flayers in German for his appearance there.  Clearly, this is a campaign event, which makes the slobbering media coverage all that more obscene.

  1. Between the German language and the Soviet style artwork…

    That’s eery.

  2. I’m getting sort of an art deco World’s Fair vibe.

  5. (Flyers, not flayers. Although, with the Nazi backdrop...)

  6. What a bunch of ridiculous pap.  You can’t even make up your minds which smear you want to decide to use.

If he’s holding an event in Germany why would the flyers be printed in any language except German?

I can understand your despair.  Your candidate has no message and is being outcampaigned everywhere, especially on the tour he dared Senator Obama to take.  I’m just amazed at the goofiness of your attacks on Senator Obama.

    This is desperation smearing here.

  7. Sorry Grumps,

The flier is kind of creepy

  9. Grumps...Your candidate has no message either other than he wants to put America in a longer and deeper economic slump.

The flyer reminds of old USSR “motivational” posters.  Appropriate.

  10. Your candidate has no message and is being outcampaigned everywhere,

Well if you think the media obamagasm is considered “out campaigning” then I guess I can’t help but agree with you.

McCain isn’t my candidate, but neither is Obama.

I will say that I’m not about to let ABC NBC and CBS decide who should be president.

I can’t speak for the sheep in this country but I hope they don’t either.

    Sorry Grumps,

The flier is kind of creepy

    I agree…

  11. There is a guy in LA I believe who made some other soviet-style posters about Obama.

I guess the guys style is known for its strong propoganda aesthetic

    http://obeygiant.com/post/obama

I wonder if he had a part in this design.

Its interesting that guy’s website brags about “propoganda engineering” and has a brand “subliminal projects”

Just in case the image doesn’t appear, here’s another socialist’s poster.

  13. The flyer swipes design cues from the Bauhaus tradition of German design.  When the Nazi’s took control of Germany the Bauhaus practitioners fled the country.  One of the founders of the Bauhaus school was a guy named Walter Gropius.  He became a naturalized American citizen, taught at Harvard and became one of this country’s most influential architects.

Condemning the flyer as foreign and creepy is as ignorant and jingoistic as Joe McCarthy on a bad day.  Sadly you guys are more than happy to carry on the worst of the WI GOP traditions.

Getting dizzy with all that spin 3rd way?

  15. It is not spin.  It is design history.  When I look at that flyer I think of the Bauhaus and Gropius.  The story of the modernist designers that immigrated to this country to flee Nazism and contribute to the design culture of America is pretty interesting and something we should be proud of.

  16. Bauhaus is in fact foreign.  It also is considered cold and dehumanizing by lots of people.  Thus a large number of people will find it “foreign and creepy”.

Bauhaus designers also went to the Soviet Union, and the comparisons to soviet era posters are entirely understandable.

  17. That’s a stretch. Creating Leninist-style posters and removing American flags from anything at any cost doesn’t scream “pride” whatsoever.

To the average Joe Public who is not a designer and doesn’t know nor care about design history, this screams, “socialism” and “communism.”

Remember, this is the same candidate who has a Che Guevara poster hanging at his headquarters.

    HopeChange.

  18. Remember, this is the same candidate who has a Che Guevara poster hanging at his headquarters.

Not quite, Fuzz. A volunteer hung the poster at a Houston campaign office. It was quickly disavowed in a campaign statement that said the poster “does not reflect Senator Obama’s views.”

To the average Joe Public who is not a designer and doesn’t know nor care about design history, this screams, “socialism” and “communism.”

Or, to use the more familiar conservative cry, the poster obviously reflects the elitist values of education and a broad worldview.

  19. No, this is the same candidate who had a really, really low level staffer in a really, really far flung field office with a Che Guevara poster. Note the past tense.

Really, this is starting to border on the ridiculous.

  20. Re: “your candidate has no message”

And “change” whatever is a message?

Posted by on July 24, 2008 at 1238 hrs

  21. If this artwork is something to be proud of, then he shouldn’t have a problem with it appearing en masse (via distribution) in, say, Des Moines… But alas, I have a sneaking suspicion it won’t.

And Bauhaus and Gropius?  Poll ten people and less than 2 will know who you are talking about.

Moreover, isn’t art supposed to evoke emotional reactions?  But yet, some people on here would even suggest we, the unwashed, are having the wrong emotional reaction… Does their condescension know no bounds?

  22. I think everyone should remember this is a poster intended for a German audience, not an American one.

  23. Oh my G-d!!!!!

I already knew Barack Hussein bin Osama was a terrorist Moslem, thanks to all my right-wing friends. But wait, that’s not all…

Now BHbO is in kahoots with the facist nazi socialist german-speaking baby killing autobahn drivers!!!

First BHbO wants us to speak Spanish, now he wants us to speak German?

    Will it ever end!?!

My head is just spinning (to the right). Bob Barr for president!

Posted by on July 24, 2008 at 1442 hrs

  24. Christ, is this all you guys got?  It’s like one notch above the “Osama” smear.  You don’t like his poster?  It’s “creepy” to you?  Aww.

And by the way, if it was such a campaign event why was it so non-partisan in tone?

Let’s all be a little more honest here and talk about the actual reasons you don’t like Obama and other Demcorats--the policy and ideological reasons--rather than take these continual name-calling and cheap ass swipes at character.

I think Obama’s european trip isn’t going as well as planned.  There’s an article today on foxnews.com that shows he has lost ground to McCain.

I think his strategy is backfiring.

As I’ve said before… He’s trying to pander to some pretty polarized demographics.

How do you pander to the unions, the black community, gays, southern democrats, etc all at once… eesh…

I don’t think he can pull ahead.  If he makes a little headway with a certain demographic he’ll lose it with another.

Posted by on July 24, 2008 at 1517 hrs

  27. Yeah, and when McCain panders to homophobic haters, Reagan Republicans, Libertarians and corporate America its just called “reaching out.” Plus, he’s done a great job at bringing all these factions on board.

    He’s winning, right?

  28. Alright, you want an issue, how about the fact that Obama is in fact an internationalist and not a patriot?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7522738.stm

Peace isn’t unnecessarily unpatriotic, but selling out your nations interests in favor of a global community sure seems that way.

  29. When you start actually wanting to debate whether the other guy is loyal to his country or not, when you actually want to introduce that as a serious topic of political discussion, it’s a clear indicator that you’ve drunk some pretty strong kool-aid, mixed and served up by the most partisan of hacks in your own camp.

  30. Michelle Malkin has an awesome version of the Obama poster.
