Obama Campaign Encourages Electioneering at the Polls

I received my instructions from the Obama campaign.  In one part, they encouraged me to break the law by electioneering at the polls.

4. Go back to your polling location and encourage everyone to stay in line until they vote. Anyone who is in line before the polls close can cast their ballot, no matter how long the line.

  1. That’s not electioneering, Owen.

  2. Main Entry: elecĀ·tionĀ·eer
    Pronunciation: \i-?lek-sh?-?nir\
    Function: intransitive verb
Etymology: election + -eer (as in privateer, verb)
    Date: 1760
: to take an active part in an election ; specifically : to work for the election of a candidate or party

Yes, to work on behalf of Obama to encourage people to stay at the polls while they are in line is electioneering.

  3. Exactly.  If this were someone who was randomly encouraging people to stay in line, then that would be different.  Since this information is included as a “step” of information from a political party, then one would absolutely consider that electioneering.  And it’s wrong.

(Ha!  My validation word is “hell”...!  Now I wonder why!?)

  4. I’m sorry, I’m not following you guys.  Encouraging people to stay in line if they want to vote is ... advocating for Obama?  This is your argument?

  5. scott - everything the Obama says and does is bad and probably illegal.  You should know this.

Oh, and he’s the next Hitler.  Do I fit in now?

  6. I am dumber for having read this post.  Though I have only myself to blame for accessing this blog.

Wis. Stat. 12.03:  “‘[E]lectioneering’. means any activity which is intended to influence voting.”

No court, anywhere, has ever held that informing people about state law, i.e., that you are permitted to vote if you are in line at 8pm, is “intended to influence voting.”

But don’t worry, I’m sure they’ll expose that wide-ranging conspiracy to commit voter fraud that threatens the very core of our democracy.  Any day now.  Really.  Any day.

Seriously though, next time you definitively characterize something as “illegal,” give us some actual authority, rather than your own self-serving and uninformed diagnosis.
