Obama Calls for Blagojevich to Resign

This seems weak

President-elect Barack Obama is calling for the Illinois governor to resign.

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs says the president-elect agrees with other prominent politicians in Illinois and elsewhere that “under the current circumstances, it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois.”

He should resign because he can’t effectively do his job?  How about he should resign because he’s allegedly a complete crook?

  1. As I said a few pages down - Blagojevich has already announced that he will not resign, he hasn’t done anything wrong, and he’s going to take it to trial.

Umm - they have you ON TAPE - how long will that jury take to find you guilty - maybe 5 minutes if they don’t order out for pizza.

Why does this spinster not just say “Barry thinks he should resign”  Why does he have to call for resignation by ‘agreeing with other prominent politicians’.

Just condemn it, call for his resignation outright.  Not because anyone else is calling for his resignation, but because its wrong and you are taking a stand against it.

While Barry’s spinsters by no means corner the market on political half-speak, how refreshing it would be for someone to just man up and tell it like it is instead of hedging everything.

  3. C’mon Owen, you know politic-speak. This is the tactful way of saying that “he is guilty as hell, and this will be born out.” Of course, he can’t come out and say this because justice has yet to be served in this case, has it not?

  4. Let’s see if he’s going to call on “Senate Candidate 5” to resign immediately.

  5. Hey, xxpilot, don’t be besmirching actual spinsters by conflating them with professional liars.

The job description of “Governor of Illinois/Chicago Machine division” is to be a crook.  Blagojevich was a lousy crook—he got caught—so he’s clearly not doing his job effectively.  QED.

As an aside, look at the leadership Obama displayed there, agreeing with everyone else after they already came out and said Blagojevich should resign, eventually, when he gets around to it, if he’s not forced out first.  Very noble, very courageous, very changey.

    Exactly…

  7. How about he should resign because he’s allegedly a complete crook?

Unlike folks like us who comment on blogs, a president (or president-elect, if you prefer) actually has to consider the niceties of the law, and like it or not, allegedly is the key word here. Blagojevich hasn’t been convicted of anything yet, even if he has been caught dead to rights. So Obama would be way out of line if he said the governor should resign “because he’s obviously guilty” or some such thing.

Given the “Obama can do no right” theme around here, if he had said that, my guess is that y’all would be hammering on him for not letting the law play itself out, screaming “innocent until proven guilty” at him.

    I beg to differ apc.

I honestly believe that I can speak for a lot of people when I say that WE WOULD BE FALLING ALL OVER OURSELVES PATTING OBAMA ON THE BACKif he would have come out and said that.

That being said I really am surprised he made ANY announcement at all

Besides Blaggo was CAUGHT ON TAPE. By the FEDS. And the Feds only lose what? Maybe 5 percent of the cases they bring to trial? It seems pretty open and shut to me.

And considering that Gov’s are SUPPOSED to act with the States “Best interest in mind” I also think its fair to question each and every move that has been made.

Were they for the betterment of the State of Illinois. Or were they for the enrichment of Blago?

  10. Michael, I doubt anyone, least of all me, is saying much of anything other than Blagojevich should be prosecuted soon, and to the fullest extent of the law, and certainly no one would ever say anything other than governments are supposed to act with the state’s best interest in mind.

I may have used an overbroad brush, but I’m sticking to my guns on the premise. Maybe not everybody, but a significant number would have ripped Obama (and rightly so, by the way) if he had simply come out and said anything implying the governor’s guilt before the justice system had its way.

The dude is on tape… get real… there’s times to ‘wait and see’ there are times when you need not be so open-minded that your brains fall out.

I give Barry credit where credit is due.  He has wisely listened to his economic advisors and backed off of his call raise taxes sooner than letting the bush tax cuts expire.

He has taken a more wait and see approach to withdrawl from iraq.

If you are going to debate with accusations of what you ‘think’ everyone would have said, well, i don’t have time to chase your imagination around all day and try to apply reason to your meanderings.  Debating conjecture with conjecture seems pretty pointless.

  12. xx, did you not see my first paragraph? I said the sooner he’s nailed the better.

there are times when you need not be so open-minded that your brains fall out.

There are legal considerations, like influencing the jury pool, that Obama has to consider. This goes beyond simply being open-minded.

Can’t argue with the point about debating conjecture with conjecture, though.

  13. APC -
if this were Bush or Cheney or Rowe - Libs and Dems would be calling for their toenails to be plucked seconds after it hit the wire.  Because this is a Dem - you want to play the allegedly game…

  14. Sometime in January of 2016, Obama is going to pardon Blago.
