Nigerian Returns to UW-Stout for Masters after 20 Years

What a cool story.

Katsina Darma of Nigeria had a goal in the 1980s: leave his homeland and earn his bachelor’s degree in vocational, technical and adult education from the University of Wisconsin‐Stout. In 1985, he returned to Nigeria with his Stout degree in hand and began teaching mechanical engineering at Katsina Polytechnic.

Upon his return to Nigeria, he launched a new initiative. He immediately began saving money to return to UW‐Stout for a graduate degree.

It took him more than 20 years, but with the sale of his land, he succeeded.

Darma returned to UW‐Stout in January 2009 to begin his graduate studies in career and technical education. Although he misses his wife and children, who remain in Nigeria, Darma is excited to be back.
