NASA’s New Mission

This is an absolute disgrace.

In a far-reaching restatement of goals for the nation’s space agency, NASA administrator Charles Bolden says President Obama has ordered him to pursue three new objectives: to “re-inspire children” to study science and math, to “expand our international relationships,” and to “reach out to the Muslim world.”  Of those three goals, Bolden said in a recent interview with al-Jazeera, the mission to reach out to Muslims is “perhaps foremost,” because it will help Islamic nations “feel good” about their scientific accomplishments.

In the same interview, Bolden also said the United States, which first sent men to the moon in 1969, is no longer capable of reaching beyond low earth orbit without help from other nations.

What the hell?

Hat tip Wizbang.

  1. Even the Soviets believed in national exceptionalism.  i.e. their space program.

We’ve not only elected a Marxist President but a slacker one at that.

  2. Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to the bumblings and stumblings of this administration. It seems that liberals have turned their backs on science advancements (unless they concern global warming) and the furthering of technology and industry based on cheap abundant energy. Now, we cut NASA and turn it into a propaganda institution for CAIR.

The difference between the left and right is becoming all too obvious. The left sees us as The Flinstones and the right wants us to be The Jetsons.

  3. Damn Obama.  Doesn’t he know he should spend more on things we like and less on things we don’t like?  He’s doing it all wrong!

... and he gave it on Al Jazeera no less. What next? Collaboration with the Iranian Space Agency on ballistic missiles?

  9. If you were President wouldn’t you want your religion, and it’s followers to be seen as more mainstream before pushing it as the country’s major religion? Did he not say America is not a Christian country? obama is not your President, he is the all powerful leader, and I truly doubt he will ever peacefully step down from office.

  13. The “new mission” is stupid, but jay’s point is valid - we don’t have any money right now, and NASA should take a funding hit like every other bloated federal agency.

  18. If this is what NASA has come to, it is way pst time to pull ALL of it?s funding?.just shut it down?.

Not to mention there’s no constitution authority that grants the federal government the ability to create and maintain a space program.

  19. Pretty much a one issue guy, aren’t you Jay?

I assume then that you are also against the existence of the Air Force? In fact, the Constitution specifically mentions only “land and naval forces… perhaps aircraft are taboo altogether then?

How about the Coast Guard, and the Marine Corps? Or the use of the National Guard during a disaster, or to secure the border?

How about the interstate highway system? Only post roads are specified in the Constitution, and they clearly exceed that mandate. The national park system? Amtrak? the FAA? The VA?

Was the Civil war illegal? Nowhere does it say that states can be forced to remain in the union.

    Just wondering, Jay.

  20. Son of Stupidity,

Had you read and understand the Constitution and the writings surrounding it, you’d know that for government to do what is not specifically enumerated an amendment to the Constitution would need to be passed.  That is what’s known as “limited government” that you like to proclaim yourself an advocate of.

Since obviously you sudden “Constitutional Conservatives” are using that very same line to protest the Health Care bill, I assumed you’d understand that it also applies in this case.  I forgot though, most conservatives are all about the Constitution until it prohibits them from doing something they like, then it’s just, as George W. Bush put it, “A goddamn piece of paper.”

No need to come up with other distractions Son of Stupidity, deal with the issue at hand.  Where does the federal government get the constitutional authority to create and maintain a space program?  If you can answer that one, then that’s why the government can be involved in Health Care as well.

  21. Actually, in the good ol’ days, an argument could have been made that NASA was a very integral part of our national security (which is pretty clearly an enumerated power).  Anyone ever hear of GPS?  Satellites?  Military…

Building self-esteem for muslims?  Not so much.

So unless NASA gets useful again, quickly.  Defund it.

  22. Actually, in the good ol’ days, an argument could have been made that NASA was a very integral part of our national security (which is pretty clearly an enumerated power).  Anyone ever hear of GPS?  Satellites?  Military…

Then do just that.  NASA has horrible mission creep and does things that are NOT national security related nor can be found enumerated in the Constitution.

However, a healthy society is in the national interest and the best for our national security so we need to fully fund and expand the influence of the federal government over health care.

  24. That’s sarcasm, right?

Of course, but I did say whatever reason someone gave for NASA would be the same reason for Health Care.

  25. Dodged the questions again, eh Jay? You never seem to have any answers, do you… it’s just the same lazy reply to everything.

Well Jay, since you want to beat that horse to death without placing any real thought beyond the exact words of the Constitution, then I present you with this:

“”The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States;”“

That vague snippet opens the door for any agency, policy, program or regulation that could be explained as promoting the general welfare. If you desire to apply, without thought or conviction, the exact letter of the law, then health care works… NASA works, all the things you despise thoughtlessly all work.

I guess your work here is done. Somalia and liberty await.

Oh goody!  Well no need to fight Health Care any longer, it is the law of the land and totally constitutional!  Health Care obviously is more important to the general welfare than shooting tin cans into space.  I’m sure Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi will appreciate your willingness to allow them to do whatever they want because according to you, EVERYTHING is Constitutional!

As usual, Son of Stupidity, you lack the ability to read and comprehend the english language.  That’s ok though, according to you the government can do anything to help you out!  To hell with Liberty, we need more government!  Huzzah, the Constitution has cleared the way for a totalitarian regime!

You win!  You’ve managed to destroy 234 years of freedom and liberty with your admission to omnipotent government power.  I bow to your greatness and heroic ability to reason anything as a responsibility of government.  Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama thank you for your contribution citizen, now pay your taxes!  You are truly a great American, selling out your neighbors so you can enjoy your hobby of shooting tin cans into space.

  27. Do you have a logical or coherent argument for anything? Just one? C’mon, you can do it.

Simply chanting your mantra of “It’s not Constitutional” isn’t really producing much. Heh, you don’t even seem to know for sure why things are not Constitutional. I’m not really feeling it from you Jay. Not a bit.

So, would you have fought the Civil was as Lincoln did? There was nothing in the Constitution prohibiting secession. Should we now be two nations? You’ve really got to answer that before you can argue about NASA and public libraries (which are actually local government, btw…. but I’m crossing two threads there). I suspect that you can’t (and won’t) make a case.

  28. Nope sorry too late, you already admitted that ANYTHING was Constitutional and you’re right!  Hurray!  Bring on the socialism, it’s in the Constitution!

Posted by Jay4Liberty on July 07, 2010 at 2035 hrs

  29. Hm, perhaps you could read back and note that I am mocking your bizarre whimpering about the Merriam Webster Constitutionality of all things. There is apparently more to the governance of a nation than you realize…leading me to believe that you haven’t thought things through very well at all. In fact, you seem reliably unable to respond rationally to any point or question regarding your beliefs.

If you believe in living the pure letter of the law (with the complete absence of common sense), then you must truly believe what you said in your previous remarks. Fortunately, we have had wiser governance than the brand you seem to advocate… but all those unanswered questions remain for you to ponder.
