MPS voted last night to begin studying what it would take to dissolve the district.
*yawn*
If they were actually serious, I’d be somewhat excited. MPS is a mess and dissolving it outright, or breaking it into several smaller districts, would make a real difference. But judging by the comments from the meeting, this was nothing but a hissy fit to garner attention and sympathy. Spare me.
Oh, and Folkbum… it’s not about your job. It’s about the kids.
If you notice, Owen, aside from the sarcastic title of the post, I didn’t say a damn thing about my job.
From Folkbum:
“And then there’s the fact that, because a year ago MPS did not tax to the maximum extent allowed by law, the state is giving us less in aid for the present school year. To spend the exact same amount this year as last, we’d need to increase the property tax levy almost 10%. If we wanted to spend more—to account for the additional burdens we face—we’d have to hold the city upside down and shake it until everything falls out of residents’ pockets.”
Can you say “death spiral”?
Anyone know exactly which school districts of major U.S. cities have been dissolved and taken over by the city governments?
Here is DC, the mayor did just that. Can’t remember if Philly did or not…
They and the governor will study the problem again cause none of them have the cojones to take on the teachers union, It is far more important to the left that the teachers support them in elections than it is to educate kids and teach them to read.
