I admit that I’m a bit surprised.
The Milwaukee School Board voted 7 to 2 Thursday night to investigate whether board member Charlene Hardin violated the board’s code of ethics in connection with a trip she took to Philadelphia in July.
The voted then voted 9 to 0 to hire a Milwaukee labor lawyer, Dan Vliet, to conduct the investigation.
The two members who voted against the investigation were Michael Bonds and Hardin herself, who spoke out publicly for the first time, accusing the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel of “a high tech lynching” of her.
I’ll put 10 to 1 odds that the investigation declares that there was no wrong doing.
I’ll take those odds. Who do I send the money to?
There seems to have been a widespread belief that this type of behavior is, not only normal, but desirable. For those who subscribe to this belief, the rest of us just aren’t “smart” enough to get free vacations and above average returns on investments.
That makes us (collectively, not necessarily individually) ripe for pickings. Hardin is a small-time operator, unethical—maybe she broke a law, maybe she didn’t. But there seems to have been nothing official in place to tell her that this was wrong—only her consience which, it seems, is nonexistent.
And this problem of no standards, of no ethics, of no sense of right or wrong, or even of honest or dishonest, or smart or stupid, has put us where we are.
She should be censured at the least and prosecuted if she broke a law. She should certainly not be re-elected, but I would not bet against it.
But how different is this, exactly, from the executives of the banks and finance companies that were bailed out—with government money—and then flew off on a hugely-expensive junket. She is no more cognizant of her wrong-doing than were the auto-company executives who went begging in their luxury corporate jets.
But, like a Ponzi scheme, this type of behavior can only go on so long. When it is only a bunch of small-time crooks, or even one or two big ones, the harm is limited. But we are discovering one after another after another after another. Turns out Enron was just the canary in the mine.
We need a revolution of honesty, decency and ethics.
Why was Hardin allowed to vote on a measure to investigate her? Doesn’t that seem like a conflict of interest?
A reasonable person would have recused themselves from voting even if it was allowed.
Not that you needed any more insight into her true character.
purrfectly putvarious mamma
“high tech lynching”? Is McGee one of her advisors?
In most private corporations, if she wasn’t outright fired, she would have to pay back all the expenses and would be given a warning that if it happened again she’d be out of a job.
purfect mamma pretty much said it all.
I would add: Hardin is a reflection of those who elected her. If they re-elect her she will epitomize the culture of her constituents.
Hardin and Adam Clayton Powell: the same logic. The “man” does it why can’t we.
Dohnal,
Why do you have to make this racial? Every dishonest person has her/his own reason. The devil made me do it. My dad beat me up. My mom didn’t love me enough. My boss is unfair. I deserve this. I got out of bed on the wrong side this morning. I ate too many Twinkies.
Are the CEOs of the auto companies and finance companies black? Is Madoff black? Is Blagojovich black?
The “man” IS doing it. So what? What she did is wrong whether “the man” was doing it or not. But is her perceived reason (you don’t really know, you’re just projecting) more wrong or more noteworthy of criticism because she is black?
Cause that is her attitude and that attitude has great credence in the minority community. Jesse Jackson, Eugene Kane and the great reverend have made a living on this attitude. Barak Obama has not and hopefully he can change that attitude.. If she was apologetic, but she’s not. She really believes that this is her due.
We have watched this attitude for years, so many hot dogs make liveing off of calling everything racial when the great majority of us believe in equality and don’t give a damn what race anyone is.
It is time for the innder city communities to grow up and realize that the great majortiy elected a minority president and they hope that he does well. I sure do, I have three kids in the service.
But the Blagoyevich’s, the Hardins of this world are just crooked and they believe that this is due them.
Unitl the inner city communities wake up, get training, get education, hold their families together they will not proposer. When they see a Hardin or an OJ do something they are just “sticking it to the man”.
It seems to me that Charlene Hardin made this racial. Can nobody else address the racial component she just interjected?
Assuming Hardin’s motives to be as you state them; you and she appear to be in complete agreement. She claims “the man” is racist and that excuses her actions; you respond by validating her reason. That’s giving her way too much credit. She’s a petty crook. She’s not really trying to make a racial point, she’s trying (and has succeeded) to get a free vacation.
You’re right. This country has taken a giant step forward. Obama would not have won without the majority of black votes, but he would not have won without millions of white votes (including mine). But even though you and I are miles apart on the political spectrum, I *think* we agree that this step is not nearly as gigantic as it appears, because it could not have been taken if the majority of this country was not ready to take it. And that majority includes many who voted against Obama, not because of race, but because of issues.
Are there still racists? Sure, always will be. And there will always be someone ready and willing to play the race card. Those who traded on the racial agenda can still spend their time counting the number of racists that fit on the head of a pin. Let them. In the meantime, let’s move ahead and stop giving the Hardins and the Jacksons and the Sharptons the excuses, attention, and validation they are seeking. They’re either irrelevant or quickly becoming so.
Mama, you made some very good points.
I am fortunate to have worked, by choice, with minorities for almost 50 years since I was a counselor in a Juvie home in 1960. I do that by preference cause in many cases some minorities are easier to get along with working together.
However I can tell you that on a weekly basis some will talk about how they “stuck it to the man”. anyone that has worked or lived as I have knows that.
I am a Libertarian conservative so I did not vote for Obama but did admire the great organization he put together of all creeds, colors, races.
I do not like the political atmosphere that he came from, Chicago is corrupt. but, he can make a giant step forward by following Bill Cosby instead of the Reverends who do little but cry or whine and essentially black mail people for money for their operations.
Now that many people have shown the ability to discard race race, sex etc. as a factor in choosing leaders as Libertarians believe maybe we can make some solid progress and those wish Obma to fail will fail themselves.

Amen. Merry Christmas!
