Mosin Nagant Goodness

Man, this is a great video.  Robb over at Sharp as a Marble just bought a Mosin Nagant M44, and he videoed his first trip to the range with it.

For those who aren’t familiar…  The Russians adopted the Mosin Nagant Model 1891 as their standard infantry rifle in 1891, and with one major modification in 1930, it remained the standard issue through WWII.  In 1938, however, the Russians started producing a shorter version, the M38, to which they eventually added a side-folding bayonet, creating the M44.  The M44 was manufactured from late 1943 until 1948ish in massive numbers.  They can be had today for as low as $70, and they make an excellent truck gun.

The M44 shoots the 7.62x54R cartridge, which is one of the longest serving battle rifle cartridges in the world.  It’s a punishing load out of the M44 (carbine-length, straight wood stock, metal buttplate, ouch).  The loads in the video are 185-grain Brown Bear.

Take note of the difference between the report of the AR firing in the background and the M44.

  1. So why is he shooting with the bayonet extended??? Does it tear your hand up if you shoot it while it’s folded?  I also like his make-shift recoil pad/towel.

  2. The M44 is more accurate if shot with the bayonet extended.

I like the look on his face about 2:00 when he really feels the recoil.

  3. Ya, that look is familar… It’s the same look I get when I’ve run about 3 rounds of 357 magnum through my Smith and Wesson 340PD.
