The owner and the operator of a north side service station should have provided greater security and failed to warn customers of potential danger, according to a civil lawsuit filed by the mother of an 18-year-old man who was shot to death at the business.
Arlene Patterson’s lawsuit cited crime statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau in her lawsuit, which seeks damages in connection with the death of her son, Nehemiah Prescott, who was shot to death Oct. 30, 2006, at the AS Gas To Go station at 1909 W. Hopkins St.

The lawsuit says 147 assaults and 43 robberies occurred in 2005 in the census tract in which the station is located.
That same year, four robberies, a larceny and a property damage complaint occurred at the station, according to the suit.
In 2006, there were three murders, 131 assaults and 40 robberies in the census tract, and, in addition to Prescott’s slaying, there were two larcenies and two incidents involving damage to property at the station, the suit says.
Dude… you’re at Burleigh and 19th. If you don’t know that’s a crime-ridden neighborhood, then you’re not paying attention.
“failed to warn customers of potential danger”
Can you imagine if this service station owner put up a sign warning that it is a dangerous area, how fast he would be called a racist.
Another slip and fall lawyer looking for a fastbuck by settling the case. Hopefully, the case will be tyhrown out and the owners of the station are given damages for a frivilous lawsuit.
