Uh huh. Because a bus tour is a completely original idea.
HUMBOLDT, Iowa (CNN) — At a stop on his bus trip through Iowa Saturday, GOP presidential candidate Tommy Thompson fired away at Republican opponent Mitt Romney, who also recently began his own bus tour of the Hawkeye State, saying that Romney is mimicking his plans.
“I’m the one that started the bus tour, and Romney is copying me,” Thompson said forcefully. “And what’s the best sense of flattery? It’s when they copy you… He’s following me around the state because I think he’s seeing the polls and seeing we’re starting to grow, and that’s going to be threatening to him.”
Tommy is seeming more desperate with each passing day.
You mean Tommy isn’t the first candidate in history to do a bus tour?
I do vaguely recall some guys doing it in 1992.
And neither Clinton nor Gore has complained about Tommy copying them.
1978, Lee Sherman Dreyfus donned a red vest & painted a crappy old bus red and named it “The Red Vest Whistle Stop Special”. I was driving past where Toucan Custard is located in West Bend when I saw it heading downtown for a stop. I’m not a professional or self-proclaimed expert on politics like most of the readers here, but I vaguely recall that Dreyfus was an “outsider” who was not annointed by the Republican Party.
I know that Thompson is dimissed as some kind of goofball (talk about getting thrown under the bus!), but I also recall that when he first ran for governor, the assumption was that he was too “backwoods” and inarticulate and unpolished to ever be Governor.
I’m not sure what the context of the above is, but having seen Channel 6 coverage of Thompson in Iowa (it was a series that ran several days), I’m not so sure that he is jealous or upset about Romney copying him, more so I think he is saying that perhaps Romney is validating his strategy by following in his footsteps. Not that long ago, Thompson was being ridiculed for doing this, now another candidate is doing it, that’s all I am saying.
I’m sure the electorate will bow to the opinions of the media and political pundits, so we don’t have to worry about Thompson’s chances of being a viable candidate. As we get older and more sophisticated, cartoon characters become less relevant.
I find Tommy more delusional than desperate. Just a couple more weeks till he shocks the world in the straw poll…
