Milwaukee To Get An Alcohol Beverage Licensing Task Force

Speaking of Alderman Willie Hines, he’s setting up an Alcohol Beverage Licensing Task Force.  His press release says:

“I do not believe that an entirely new system of licensing is necessary for the City of Milwaukee,” said President Hines. “However, I realize that the criminal acts of the former alderman for the 6th District have created a sense of distrust or skepticism on the part of some residents. It is paramount that the licensing process be above reproach, without even a hint of wrongdoing. This newly created body will go a long way in helping the City of Milwaukee completely restore its image for fair and impartial public hearings.”

The selection process for ABLTF is already underway, and members – potentially to include representatives from the Milwaukee Police Department, the City Attorney’s Office and citizens from the community – are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

“We will be open to any and all recommendations that the ABLTF submits – even to go so far as to overhaul the system completely, if necessary,” said President Hines. “Once again, I believe that it would be misguided and reactionary to do away with local representation completely, but I will not rule out anything that the body might recommend.”

  1. Thoughts?

Ain’t nothing like a cure for government corruption like more government…

I’m sure it’ll make it all better.

Seriously though, Willie must be REALLY nervous about the dots getting connected here.

  2. The local alderman should have a say in the process, insofar as he/she responds to members of his/her district.

That’s called “subsidiarity,” and is critical for good government.

The fact that there was a crook in the process doesn’t make the process bad.
