Nuts.
A proposal to overhaul the Milwaukee Public Schools also would mandate 33% student discounts on Milwaukee County Transit System bus passes - but only if the state authorizes a new 0.5% sales tax to fund the bus system.
The bill by state Rep. Tamara Grigsby and state Sen. Spencer Coggs would link two major issues - who should control the school district and how to pay for transit - both of which are awaiting action from the Legislature.
The simple fact that they want to link an MPS overhaul to a sales tax and bus fares indicates that they are not serious about fixing MPS. The one issue has virtually nothing to do with the other.
Yeah, another half percent sales tax in Milwaukee County, that’ll help us small retailers in the county.
It just gets harder and harder to business in this city. More and more businesses are moving out of the county, I have seen my commercial accounts reduced by 30% over the past ten years. If they keep this crap up, there wont be ANY jobs left in the county for the graduates of the “newly reformed” MPS to take the bus to.
This accomplishes their goal of attaching a lead weight to MPS reform, while they can then claim that they are for reform.
I am not in favor of the MPS over hall, so I guess I like this poison pill amendment. I think MPS is a horrid excuse of a school district but I really don’t understand why anyone thinks having the mayor appoint the superintendent is going to make a difference. Sure, the mayor would be politically accountable for MPS but the school board already is and I don’t see people flocking to toss the bums out. And MPS is the only issue they face election on.
If the mayor appointed the super, then MPS becomes a diluted issue - one of many issues the mayor has to deal with. And lets not forget the huge unintended consequence of this proposal- WEAC and all its money will now have a very good reason come to Milwaukee for every mayoral election.
This is a bad idea. It won’t change anything and it will invite WEAC to the mayoral elections.
Again showing that Dems limited solution to every problem: increase taxes or implement a new tax.
