Milwaukee County Parks Among The Best Managed In the Nation

Huh.  I’m confused.  I thought the parks were falling apart?

Judges have named the Milwaukee County Parks Department a finalist in a competition for the best managed park program in the nation.

The county parks system is one of the top four contenders for the 2009 National Gold Medal for Excellence in the Park and Recreation Management Program. Leaders from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and the National Recreation and Park Association choose the top candidates each year based on a review of their master plans and a 12-minute video featuring the department’s programs.

  1. No, Owen…the Walker haters just think if they say it often enough people will believe it.

Just think, if Walker wasn’t blocked from hiring more seasonal workers (at a time when parks are acutally being used) they could be all that much better.

  2. I hope we win. I would LOVE to see the “the parks are in shambles crowd” at the award ceremony.

I’m surprised the JS even ran this story.

  3. Milwaukee County has a population of less than million people ( 960,000) and has 25,000 acres of county parks.
Cook County IL. (  Chicago is in Cook County) has population of 5 million people and it has only 40,000 acres of county parks. How many acres of county parks does Milwaukee County need ?  can afford ?  should we have more ? have less ?

  4. Jim, I’d rather not hold Chicago up as any sort of standard that we should compare ourselves with.

  5. This just means that the rest of the nation has some really lousy parks. I remember when the parks were truly a treasure. Too bad we have to pay for pensions instead of making the park system what it was when we were kids.
