McCain and Obama on Heller

Heh.

Voicing a stance that could help him woo conservatives and libertarians, McCain said, “This ruling does not mark the end of our struggle against those who seek to limit the rights of law-abiding citizens. We must always remain vigilant in defense of our freedoms.”

Indeed.  McCain nails it.

His Democratic rival, Obama, issued a more carefully worded statement apparently aimed at both moderate voters and his liberal base. The statement from Obama, who has long said local governments should be able to regulate guns, did not specifically say whether Obama agreed with overturning the specific D.C. ban. But he said Thursday’s ruling “will provide much-needed guidance to local jurisdictions across the country.”

“I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms, but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through commonsense, effective safety measures,” Obama said.

Obama, unlike McCain, misses the mark.  He says more words than McCain, but they don’t really say anything.  He says that he supports the individual right to keep and bear arms, but then goes on to explain how it is OK to effectively regulate that right out of existence.

  1. No question that Obama parses.  And, by the way, he lies.

Prior legislative activity (Ill House) would seem to indicate that he thinks the RKBA applies only to duck-hunters.

  2. Obama always talks a lot with seldom actually saying anything meaningful.

  3. I see where the issue of local control of government conflicts with the 2nd amendment. Right to bear arms is already regulated.
This will still not address the real problem of how the criminals get guns. That was more or less what I got from Obamas message.
McCain nailed it by memorizing the NRAs talking points. At least he knows not to mess with them as they pull alot of support.
Talking sensibly about the issue of high crime in the larger cities should not make Obama out as a poor leader.
