Mayor Deiss’ Poor Attitude

Here’s West Bend’s new mayor.

Deiss was not going to allow anyone from the public to speak, saying the council already had heard from the public, until Frederick protested.

“They’re here tonight. What are you afraid of?” Frederick said.

“Oh, all right,” Deiss replied.

Not only does she not want the rabble to have the opportunity to be appointed mayor, she doesn’t even want to hear what they have to say.  What is her hang up with representative government?

UPDATE: You HAVE to go listen to this short exchange between Alderman Frederick and Alderman Deiss that Fuzz Martin posted.  Deiss wants to deny the citizens the opportunity to speak and Frederick nails her for it.

  1. I am so very disappointed in you and the City of West Bend’s 3 Alderman that have been so incredulously self serving during the past few weeks.  Last nights display by Alderman Fredricks was disgusting, rude and juvenille, not to mention on the border of slanderous!  He is the problem in West Bend, not Deiss!

It is quite unfortunate that you can not understand that MANY of the West Bend constituents want to be represented by individuals that serve everyone, NOT just the self serving ones.  As far as Deiss not wanting to open the floor on this topic… the public had the past 3 weeks to thoroughly discuss this issue at the past meetings as well as through direct contact with all Aldermen.

It is now time to move forward and for the entire council to act in a responsible manner.  If any of them feel that they are unable to do this, then they should be the ones to remove themselves from serving, since, by walking out of the meeting last week, they, in fact, gave up the right to represent their constituents.  As has been said the past few weeks by numerous individuals in editorials and various columns, the democratic process is that the majority rules!  Now, let’s just move on!

  2. How exactly were the three Aldermen self-serving?  Did they receive anything for their actions?  Seems to me that they provided quite a service by drawing attention to this issue.  In the end they lost the vote, but at least the people got engaged a bit.  If anyone is self-serving on that council, it’s Deiss and King - both of whom are going to get elevated to higher positions.

It’s hard for me to “just move on” when I am no longer represented in city government.  I didn’t vote for my mayor and I won’t get to vote for my Alderman.

It bothers me when people get “disappointed” when people engage in a rigorous debate.  That signals a greater interest in “getting along” rather than properly vetting the issues.  Representative government isn’t supposed to always be nice and friendly.  It’s not a social club.  It’s doing the people’s business and representatives should aggressively speak their minds.

  3. I don’t think that government must always be “nice and friendly”, however, it should always be “Civil” and last nights meeting was far from civil.

  4. West Bend is looking more and more like Menomonee Falls every day.

  5. I live in Menomonee Falls and WISH I could resent that, Boss Hog.

  6. We need as many Frederick types as possible to take back our goverment from the types of Diess. The courthouse and the city should not be under there thumb, or any other branch of goverment. People need to wake up!

  7. Does Quality of Life have any clue what they sound like in this post?  “MANY” could be 50 people or more, hardly a majority of the people in WB.  Owen pointed out the self-serving flaw.  Walking out to prevent a quorum is a perfectly legal political tactic in this case where a minority is trying to raise awareness, much like a filibuster in practice.
It was the exact opposite of “by walking out of the meeting last week, they, in fact, gave up the right to represent their constituents.” if their constituents wanted to vote for the new Mayor.  In no case would that action ever make them ‘give up the right to represent’.  Lastly, ‘the three’ were doing exactly what Qol is giving credit to ‘the five’ for in the last paragraph.  They wanted to find out if the majority (the voters) really wanted an appointed Mayor or if a special election should be held.

I could get more wrong than that comment, but it would include aliens.

  8. West Bend you have turned into the Menomonee Falls of Washington County.  You have to try to stop these people now before it gets worse.  It may even be too late.

Menomonee Falls is the most incestuous (man I think I spelled that wrong) town in Wisconsin.  Everyone on every board or commitee, optimist club, rotary, etc. is in the same group and many have the same last name.  Their number #1 piority is to hand over favors for one of their own and rub each others backs.  The constituents come second.

You have no chance of getting involved in anything or changing anything or in this town unless you are in “the circle.”

Good Luck West Bend, your in for a long, frustrating and bumpy ride.
