Manish Patel Believed To Have Fled

This is contemptible

Wisconsin authorities say they believe a man who allegedly tried to force is girlfriend to have an abortion by spiking her drink with the dangerous mifepristone abortion drug has likely fled the country. Manish Patel may have headed for his native India despite the revocation of his passport.

Late last month, Patel did not check into a day center for those on bond and his attorney hasn’t seen him since the middle of December.

Outagamie County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Chris Proietti says Patel’s wife left for India in late November and he thinks Patel may have followed her.

[...]

Former state Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager, who represents Darshana Patel, the victim who shares the same last name but is not married to Manishkumar, said she doesn’t know his whereabouts either.

The man is from a foreign country, has the means and family connections to return to that country, has the moral standards of a roach, and is accused of a crime that could land him in prison for a long, long time.  Why was he allowed to post bail?  If this guy didn’t constitute a flight risk, nobody does,

  1. Seems like the judge and sherif screwed up on this.  Why wasn’t he under house arrestor electronic monitoring.
He was released on $750,000 cash bail, put up by his friends.  boy are they going to pissed when they lose that money and I have no sympathy towards them for losing that money.

  5. Dan:

If I remember correctly he owns a string of gas-stations in the Fox Valley and put the bail up himself, so I am thinking that in his mind this was just “a cost of doing business” especially when you consider the alternative of him being in jail.

As far as the court system dropping the ball on this ABSO-FN-LUTELY: I just did a CCAP on him, -just for giggles- under his real name, he has about 15 contacts with the law.

Under the name MANISH he has 44!!!!! Judges don’t have that much contact with the court system!!

This guy never should have seen the light of day!

The first time I saw this on the news a while ago I thought “What the hell was he thinking….”

...“only women have the right to terminate their pregnancy”

  7. sorry Michael, but I read it in the Appleton Post Crescent paper.
Patel was freed from jail Dec. 3 after his friends pooled their resources to come up with $750,000 in cash needed to spring him from jail

Patel is a very common Indian name as is Manish.  I suspect there are more than just him listed.  Google the name Manish Patel and you will get over 25,000 hits.

That’s what really needs to be addressed here.

  13. I am not overly upset that this piece of crap does not live in WI or the US any longer, but it does upset me for 2 other reasons.  1.  he will never be caught now, and never “pay” for his crime(s).  2.  He probably did go back to India, and I am scared for his girlfriend that went back there a little over a month ago.  He may seek “revenge” on her, kill her, and since India’s standards on how they treat women and men differ (religion, hinduism and muslim), never pay for that crime either.  Sad, sad story.  I sure hope someone can warn this poor women somehow.

  14. The one thing that I think has been missed here is worst case scenario, he is convicted. FINE! He remains free on appeal, and based on the merits of this case, it stood ONE HELLUVA chance at going all the way to the SCOTUS.

This knucklehead could have been convicted and possibly stayed out of prison for many many years.

Obviously Lautenschlager thought so to or she NEVER would have taken this guys case in the first place.

  16. If you read the story, drunkenschlager represents the victim, not the purported abortion inducement expert.

So let’s address it.  This has been bothering me the whole time as well.  Why is it that the man is being charged for the murder of the baby, when if the woman had taken the same medication without the father’s consent, it would have been just fine?  How is that right?

  21. Shana et al, perhaps it’s a crime when he does it and not a crime when she does it because the fetus is in her body.

    It’s quite simple, really.

Or would it be quite alright with you if I secretly gave you random medications?

So without her consent is wrong, but as Shana points out, if she wants to terminate her pregnancy she doesn’t need the guys consent.

That seems a whole lot of fair right there.

Presumably the arguement is always lobied on males that ‘you play the game, you suffer the consequences’

And if a woman get pregnant and she wants to have the baby and the guy doesn’t, “he has to suffer the consequences of his behavior” aka takes 2 to tango.  So that means baby, child support, etc.

But if SHE gets pregant, and she doesn’t want the baby, she doesn’t have to suffer the consequences of her behavior.

    Very equitable…  [/sarcasm]

You’re obviously missing the overall point here.  The question is:  Why is it okay for a woman to destroy a child resulting in a sexual union without the consent of the man (who contributed 50% of his dna to that child), and yet it is NOT okay for the man to have the same amount of interest in the pre-born life of the same child?  A woman can destroy the child without the man’s consent, or choose to keep it without the man’s consent (and later sue him for child support), however the man cannot have any say whatsoever?  How is that right?

I don’t think that anyone should be given medication without consent, but that gets into a whole other set of issues that really don’t have anything to do with the overall point.  What the man did was wrong.  But why is it murder for him, when the woman can choose to take the same medication, and it’s suddenly alright?
