Looking for More Cash

And you thought taxes were high already in Milwaukee?  Just wait

The County Board parks committee on a 5-2 vote endorsed a November referendum question asking voters for approval of a half-cent sales tax increase to support parks.

The move comes on the heels of another half-cent sales tax increase referendum measure to raise money for transit, approved last week by the County Board’s Transportation, Public Works and Transit Committee.

Together, the plans envision an increase in sales taxes of some $130 million annually, a 200% increase over what the current 0.5% county sales tax brings in.

  1. What is great is the the “Wisconsin isn’t tax hell” people all cite other states higher sales taxes as their justification for why it isn’t bad here.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the “Well, our taxes in this category are high, but remember, we have no high regressive 6,7 or 8 percent sales tax like other States”

I pray these both get voted down.  Otherwise last one out the State, turn out the lights.

  2. Yet, the city/county just can’t seem to figure out why people are leaving in droves. Milwaukee’s population had dropped +/- 200k in the last 50 years. Despite Walker’s valiant efforts, Milwaukee has become another Detroit.

    Tax! Tax! Tax!
Let’s say you are buying a $30k automobile. Are you seriously going to consider making the purchase in Milwaukee and pay an addtional $150 in tax? The board has got to stop drinking the More Tax Kool-Aid.

  3. I still remember the ads from 1963 in the Knowles vs John Reynolds governors race.

The democrats said in them:  “clothes for your kids are expensive enough now, but the 3% Republican sales tax will make them more expensive.”
Now the democrats just want to spend more money, no matter how they get it.  The GOP has not been much better the last decade or so.  Only Mike Huebsch has stood in the way of big tax increases last time.
Now it’s a 1/2 % for the DNR, another 1/2% fpr transit, another 1/2% for the parks, all on the slaes tax the regressive tax as the ddemocrats used to say.  all to go into the pockets of the public employees unions.
Pretty soon it will be 10% and they still will be telling us that we’re under taxed.

  4. If you live outside of Milwaukee or Milwaukee county and buy a car there, you pay the sales tax on where your residence is, not Milwaukee.  That way, Milwaukee dealers still will get out of town business.  The ones hurt are the people with a Milwaukee address as they pay the higher sales tax.

On other purchases, it pays the buyer to buy outside Milwaukee as any sale in the county/city will be at the higher rate.  Don’t shop in Milwtown and don’t live there when the sales tax rises.

  6. Gee - I can shop at Mayfair where the sales tax will be 6.6% or at Brookfield Square where the sales tax will be 5.1%

I wonder which one I should go to…
