Looking at the Tax Bill

I’m sitting here going through the numbers on our property tax bill.  Overall, our property taxes are up 2.5%.  Here’s an interesting tidbit:

City of West Bend:

2008 State Aid = $3,914,415
2009 State Aid = $3,647,291
Change in State aid = (6.8%)
Change in tax = (0.5%)

West Bend School District:

2008 State Aid = $18,647,949
2009 State Aid = $18,076,808
Change in State aid = (3.06%)
Change in tax = 10.9%

State aid for only one of the taxing bodies on the property tax went up.  Moraine Park Technical College saw a 3% increase to $572,478.
They also increased their property tax levy by 1.6%.

Washington County saw a 2.9% decline in state aid and increased the property tax by 0.8%.

Also an interesting bit of information that I had not encountered before… we have a special assessment on our bill.  If we paid in the four installments offered (we don’t), they divide the property tax into four bites, but put the entire special assessment on the first payment.  I’m curious as to the reasoning behind that.  Anyone know?

How are y’all’s property taxes looking out there?

  1. The school portionof my property tax bill went up 8%.  That is less than what was expected from the WBSD.  Total bill up about $170.  $300,000 house.  I have no problem with any of that.

  3. Don’t have percentages offhand, but I’m in Richfield, in the Germantown district.  Overall, taxes went up about 8%, with the majority of that being the school district and smaller portion being MATC.  All other taxes (county and village) were flat.  Disappointing, but not unexpected.

  4. That’s horrific! I don’t understand why we can’t get taxed more!( we are one of the lowest spending Districts in the state)!
How do we expect to get a quality education on the pittance of a salary we give our under paid, poor benny packaged, under funded pension, can’t get a raise or their Domestic partners on the Health plan , no time off during the year, it’s all for the children, Teachers??? I feel ashamed when I have a few extra dollars to spend on my family that I could pay in additional Taxes.

I will be writing to Joe, Pat and the rest of the gang that this is unacceptable!
We need to pay more, I’m thinking of another 10+% next year, I know that wont be enough so I will also propose that we have a couple of Referendums as well.

And another thing, I don’t see why our Board members can’t expense more of their trivial trips to anywhere they want. And they should really have more Party’s ( at lease once a month) that we pay for! They work really hard and should be rewarded for that

It’s my holiday wish that maybe next year when I open my property tax bill I will truly be SHOCKED!

  6. Would it not be easier for the district to just demand a debit card from every household, maybe direct deposit from your employer.
Its Christmas, its for the children, peace on earth.

  7. Milwaukee up 7.2% and climbing again next year.  I was told that it’s all for the kids or something like that.  Oh, and I was reminded that we have things garbage pickup and roads too.

  10. TTTM - give it a rest. Did you get fired by the District or something?
I know you are terrified that you might be carrying more than your weight. I guess you must be a rich guy paying all sorts of taxes. So, why don’t you stop hiding behind Owen’s petticoats and tell us who you are so we can thank you.

  11. Percentage are percentages.

What’s the tax per $1,000 of property value for city, county, schools, MPTC in Richfield, Germantown, Milwaukee, Menominee Falls, Waukesha, other? If nothing else, what’s your total?

    West Bend 2009
I’m using assessed value for the rates. Correct?

    %change
    state       0.182 -.5%
    Wash cty   2.986   +2%
    WB-City     8.536 +.7
    WBSch     6.875 +12.2
    MPTC       1.49 +2.7%
    Total       20   +3.2%

Closing rhetorical question: If West Bend tax rates are comparable or lower than other areas (as I suspect), why are businesses not (re)locating here?  Is it location, location, location?  Something else?

  12. Town of Raymond in Racine went down .0127% this year.  Considering they have increased from $1789 in 2004 to $3298 last year, I was utterly shocked.
