Letter From Doyle

I received this email from Governor Doyle of Wisconsin regarding concealed carry.  I signed up for his email list when he was running for office so that I could keep tabs on him.

I went to check out the website he put up.  He’s asking for donations to fight concealed carry and help out legislators running for office, but I notice that the actual donation goes to the “Doyle for Governor” campaign.  Considering that he isn’t up for election this year, it seems a somewhat deceitful.  Shouldn’t the money be going the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, the actual legislators who are in danger this year, or any number of the anti-gun organizations?  It seems to me that Doyle is just using this to help build his campaign fund for his next election.

Dear Friend,

Last Tuesday, Democratic members of the Wisconsin State Assembly took a courageous stand and joined with me in achieving an important victory on behalf of the people of Wisconsin.

They voted to uphold my veto to ensure that we would not allow lethal weapons into the YMCA, into crowded shopping malls where our kids are …at rock concerts and movie theaters …at the state fair… and even on playgrounds.

We were faced with a simple choice: stand with law enforcement and protect public safety, or stand with the gun lobby.

I’m proud to say that by working together, Wisconsin became the first state in the country to sustain a Governor’s veto on a concealed weapons bill!

While we won this vote, this fight is far from over.

The day after the vote, Republicans already promised to introduce another concealed weapons bill next year, a bill that they say will be, “a better bill with less restrictions than the one that was passed in November.”

It’s hard to believe that they could have made this bill even worse.  This bill would have already given Wisconsin one of the most extreme laws in the country.

Even after what happened at Columbine, the bill weakened the restrictions against carrying guns in school zones.  I think we should all agree that our schools need more textbooks and more teachers, but one thing they don’t need is more guns.

Under this bill, not even the police would have been able to know whether someone they pull over on a traffic stop is licensed to carry a gun.  These men and women are heroes because they face danger every day – but this bill makes the danger worse. That is why law enforcement spoke out so unanimously against this bill.

This bill would have allowed guns in virtually any public building, any business, any store, any church, any playground, the list goes on and on.  And next year, we now know that Republicans want to make the bill even worse.

I think you would agree with me that its time for the Legislature to get back to the issues that really matter: strengthening our schools, improving health care, and creating jobs for our citizens.

But it doesn’t look like that is going to happen anytime soon.

Republicans in the state legislature have so completely been taken over by special interests that the NRA in Washington planned and announced the vote in the Senate before the Majority Leader’s office even knew the vote was scheduled.

This was special interest politics at its worst.

I need your help to continue the fight for common sense Wisconsin values.  We can’t afford to allow the NRA and other special interests to dominate the agenda in Wisconsin.  There is simply too much at stake.

I am relying on your continued support.

I need you to visit a new website, noconcealedweapons.com – I need you to sign the petition saying you are opposed to lifting the ban on concealed weapons.

I need you to get active in your local community on this issue.  You can do this by working on behalf of legislative candidates that will put the will of the people of Wisconsin above the demands of special interests.

And, I need your financial support of $30, $50, $100 or even $250.  Your donation will ensure we have the resources to stand up against our opponents’ radical agenda. Our opponents have unlimited resources at their disposal. They are determined to do whatever it takes to advance their cause. They have shown they will do whatever it takes to get it done.

Republicans are convinced that they can use this vote to propel themselves to veto proof majorities – we can’t afford to allow that to happen.

Together, we will make good on our commitment to protect Wisconsin values and improve the lives of our citizens.  We need to send a message that the extreme Republican agenda in the Legislature is not what Wisconsin citizens want from their state government.

Many thanks,

Jim Doyle

P.S. I pledge to keep fighting for Wisconsin families against the radical, right-wing agenda.  Your contribution will ensure we have the resources necessary for success.

  1. How disgusting.

This was more of a personal victory for him than it was for anyone else in Wisconsin.

Keep fighting the right fight, people. This is a letter of fear, nothing more.

    Have a nice day

  2. ”...the radical, right-wing agenda..”

And now we know what his thoughts are about the U.S. Constitution. It’s radical, and right winged.

Funny, that. I thought it was the law of the land. Silly me.
