Labor Day Labor

We celebrated Labor Day weekend by doing… well… labor.  On Saturday we got cookin’ sanding and preparing the deck.  Sunday we took the day off and played at the lake with family.  Today it was back to work.  We cleaned and finally stained the deck.  We still have some touch-up work to do and some lattice frilly foo-foo deck trim, but the bulk of the work is done.  I admit, it looks great.  As soon as my back stops hurting, I’ll really appreciate it.  For the record, I have made an executive decision that this is the last deck that we will refinish.  The next time it needs it, we’re either ripping it out and putting in a composite deck or paying someone else to do it.

Where’re those cheap illegal aliens who will do the work I don’t want to do when I need them?

Next deck project… our deck has a sizable cutout in it that used to have a koi pond and fountain.  We took out the pond because we didn’t want to maintain it.  We’re thinking of putting in some small bushes, flowers, or perhaps a small herb garden.  Suggestions?

  1. Yeah - rip the deck out and replace it with a concrete patio lik e I just did.

  3. After working our tails off today, we’re filling the hole with a hot tub. No discussion, I’m calling the hot tub people tomorrow.

  5. Use AZEK.  It’s 100% recycled CPVC, comes in different colors, and even had a special “grain” on it, just like real cedar.  Costs about $2.30/LF.  No more maintenance, ever.

  6. We’re on our second hot tub.  The first was coordinated with the deck.

The second went on a concrete slab.  More better to clear it of snow for use in January.

We built a fence this weekend.  However, my back is terrific after my leisurely soak in the spa with a martini tonight…

  7. Then again, surely we can find somewhere INSIDE the house for the hot tub. Snow and hot tub don’t seem to mix.

  8. I spent the weekend either at work, or at home painting.  Trim in the upstairs bathroom is done, walls still need more primer.  Trim on landing is done, started painting the walls.  Also got started on the trim in my bedroom.  I’m starting to feel like I’ll be done with college before I’m done painting this place.

  9. Hey.

Until you have experienced the thrill of hot tubbing in winter with your main squeeze, a glass of wine and the heavens full of stars you are missing something…

Bah, only rookies put their hot tubs inside…  Experienced owners know that it’s better to have the neighbors naked on the outside of the house than inside!

  13. “Bah, only rookies put their hot tubs inside… “

Only fools put hot tubs outside. Only fools buy hot tubs. Opting for a Kohler BubbleMassage tub would actually add valve to your property.

“We took out the pond because we didn’t want to maintain it.”
And you’re considering installing a hot tub?
See those hot tubs along the road for sale or free? There’s a good reason.

“Until you have experienced the thrill of hot tubbing in winter with your main squeeze, a glass of wine and the heavens full of stars you are missing something…”

And when that wears out after the second time, then what?

  14. BTW, Kohler BubbleMassage tubs are an indoor product.
