What?
A death row inmate scheduled for execution says he’s too fat to be put to death, claiming executioners would have trouble finding his veins and that his weight could diminish the effectiveness of one of the lethal injection drugs.
Lawyers for Richard Cooey argue in a federal lawsuit that Cooey — 5-feet-7 and 267 pounds — had poor veins when he faced execution five years ago and the problem has been worsened by weight gain.[...]
Cooey, 41, is sentenced to die for raping and murdering two young women in 1986. His execution is scheduled for Oct. 14.
First, is says something that our prison system is actually set up where a death row inmate can be that fat.
Second, I’m sure we can find a way to execute the killer. If not the needle, the chair. If not the chair, the firing squad. Whatever. I’m not too concerned with his comfort.
You would think his weight would enhance the effectiveness of a hanging.

Problem fixed.
Posted by jimi on August 05, 2008 at 0030 hrsThe Left shouldn’t be supporting this guy weighing down death row. Imagine his carbon footprint! He’s eating too much food (probably trans fats), releasing more than his fair share of flatulence, and other effects detrimental to the climate.
But don’t give him the electric chair. That would waste energy. Put the guy on a big hamster wheel turning a generator. He can add energy to the grid and die of a heart attack.
Don’t mean to sound so morbid, but this is absurd. Just execute him.
Posted by Josh Schroeder on August 05, 2008 at 0152 hrsIf they starve him until Oct 14, he should be lite enough then. He should have enough stored up mass to carry him thru.
Posted by on August 05, 2008 at 0809 hrsNothing more than grasping at straws to try to save the life of a cold blooded murderer so that he can eat himself to death in prison.
What did this fat waste of space weigh when he was convicted 22 years ago?
I’d prefer they just handcuff him and drop him in a lake.
According to the trial record, on 31 August 1986, 17-year-old Clint Dickens dropped a chunk of concrete off a bridge, hitting a car beneath. He and his two friends, 19-year-old Richard Cooey and 18-year-old Kenneth Horonetz, then offered a ride to the occupants of the car, Wendy Offredo and Dawn McCreery, so that they could call for help. They drove them to a nearby mall where Wendy Offredo called her mother, and Richard Cooey gave the mother directions to pick up the women. Dawn McCreery called the police. The five then got back in Cooey’s car to drive back to the damaged vehicle. Richard Cooey and Clint Dickens had decided to rob the women, and Kenneth Horonetz jumped out of the car when the robbery began. The women were driven to an isolated wooded area, where they were subsequently murdered by blows to the head.
After a two-day trial in November 1986 in front of a panel of three judges, Richard Cooey was convicted of kidnapping, rape, robbery and murder. After a sentencing phase which began and ended on 5 December 1986, he was condemned him to death. Clint Dickens received a life sentence, being too young for the death penalty under Ohio law. He will not be eligible for parole until 2082.
22 YEARS for an execution date.
