Juneteenth Violence

On the heels of the Juneteenth violence in Milwaukee, we get this:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A crowd attacked and killed a passenger in a vehicle that had struck and injured a child, police said Wednesday.

Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night. The man who was killed had been trying to stop the group from attacking the vehicle’s driver when the crowd turned on him, authorities said.

  1. It is a sub-cultural thing.  Don’t they have any Bookmobiles down there?

  2. If they did, I’m sure the roaming thugs would flip them over and set them on fire.

Here in Madison, everytime a club offers a ‘hip-hop’ night, gunfire rings out.  At a local pool hall that did the same, a fight broke out among 230 people.  You read that correctly - 230 people involved in a fight.

So it’s not just a Milwaukee thing.  It’s spread to the People’s Republic of Madison as well.

  3. Wow, that’s some nice hyperbole there Pants.  Can you remind me about the last shooting?  That must have slipped my mind (as well as the shootings at every other hip-hop night).  You should really be informing the police of all these shootings.

As for the 230 person riot, read the police press report for yourself:

That devil’s music is just destroying our nation.  And this fear-mongering about black music is nothing like the fear-mongering about black music last time (or the time before).

  4. Jason, you’re an idiot.  Club 7 on Odana Road.  Stillwaters on State Street (ten shots fired). The Majestic on King Street - numerous fights and melees.  The Annex on Regent Street.  Club Hilltop off Badger Road.  And my apologies on the Cue-nique hip hop brawl.  It was only 120 people.

Ahhh…I feel much safer now.  There are no problems associated with hip hop nights in Madison.  Thanks Jason, you really put me at ease.

  5. When he mentioned hip hop I thought of Eminem first as my mental “picture”  of hip hop.  And Kid Rock.

Could you please tell me what this “Black Music” is?

Hip Hop is a real genre.  Black music a label you’re using.

  9. watching the video of the milwaukee juneteenth ‘celebration’  is just disgusting.  What a bunch of savages.

seeing the innocent passerby get kicked in the head…

You see what the ‘culture’ is like in the ghetto and realize how expecting anything from it is absurd.

  10. I finally watched the video from the MKE Juneteenth celebration and the only thing worse then the beatings and car smashing was the fact that the reporters mentioned 4 times in a 2 minute clip that this was just a few bad apples and that the violence did not start until 40 minutes after Juneteenth was officially over.  Talk about being afraid of the reaction of the black community.

  11. Joe, I noticed the exact same thing…  I mentioned that in the other post on here about the juneteenth violence.

      http://www.bootsandsabers.com/index.php/weblog/permalink/juneteenth1/

Clearly Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton et al have been successful in their goal of putting the fear of god in everyone who would DARE make any comment that might even tangentially be construed as less than positive about “the black community” or anything related to the behavior of members of the black community.  Or the mere implication that celebrations in the black community have a strong proclivity to turn into violence.

  12. Eugene Kane was right on schedule with diminishing the implications of the violence surrounding Juneteenth Day.  He called them “knuckleheads”.  So predictable.

It got me wondering: how many times has German Fest, Festa Italiana, Polish Fest, Irish Fest, African World Fest, and the rest of the festivals at on the Summerfest grounds have let out to be followed by this kind of violence year after year?  What is it about Juneteenth Day?

  13. I worked an information booth at Juneteenth Day once about seven years ago.  I would never do it again.  It’s a poorly planned event…and the word “chaos” pretty much describes everything I witnessed.

That being said, I find that the lack of effective security and inappropriateness of staged events (i.e., young teens rapping quite inappropriate lyrics given a stage and a mic to perform in a talent contest) attracts the very worst that the black community has to offer…they know that pretty much “everything goes” at Juneteenth Day so they love going.  I could attend a Blues Festival in another part of town that’s largely attended by African-Americans and not experience any “knuckleheads” whatsoever.  When you plan an event (or fail to), the decisions you make dictate who will be attracted to your event.

  14. “knuckleheads?”  a knucklehead is someone who decides to tow their friend down the street with their car a skateboard and a rope…

Someone who smashes windows of an innocent passerby..

Someone who reaches into the car said smashed car and grabs whatever they can get their hands on…

Someone who KICKS an innocent passerby in the HEAD…

    That is not a knucklehead, that’s a savage criminal…

The fact that the violence is random makes it even worse…

I could attend a Blues Festival in another part of town that’s largely attended by African-Americans and not experience any “knuckleheads” whatsoever.

Judging by the demographics of the crowds based on the television footage of these ‘riots’ it is definitely the YOUNG black crowds that are so out of control.

  15. Just a couple of things. This was quite a ways from the event, and in the parking lot of an apartment complex; it had absolutely nothing to do with the staged event. Also, I’ve lived in Austin for nearly 30 years, and this is the first time I’ve EVER heard of anything like this happening here.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m in no way trying to excuse, ameliorate, or lessen the horror of what happened here. The entire city is shocked.

    You don’t know that…

It may have had nothing to do with the staged event, but likely had EVERYTHING to do with the PEOPLE THAT ASSEMBLED for the staged event.

  17. Well, come to find out…

    http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/06/22/22media.html

It looks like it wasn’t a gang of thousands after all. Tragic, certainly, but not a “wilding” by a gang from the event.

  18. Did you notice that after the death in Austin, an officer, even though he didn’t know who was initially involved, said that it wasn’t a “hate crime” in the earliest stages of the investigation.  He also tried to separate the crime from the Juneteenth festivities.  It seemed to me that he was more concerned about covering bases than about bringing the murderers to justice.  I ask this question as a black man:  If a large group of young white people beat to death a black or hispanic person, (whether 30 or only 4) would it not have been labeled a “hate crime?”  Nevermind that a small child was hit by a car, who wasn’t seriously hurt.  There’s no justification in pummeling anyone to death in this case, but the PASSENGER??

  19. i got raked over the coals for comments similar to the above in an Isthmus forum.  sure, these perps attacked and beat innocent peoplem destroyed property and stolem but i called them savages, so that means I’M THE BAD GUY!

  20. Well, you shouldn’t have been raked over the coals because it was savage-like behavior…pure and simple.  I have also seen savage-like behavior from whites in Europe after soccer games where several people were killed or injured (even cops) and property damage was high!  That was savagery as well.  In America, when some colleges had student who rioted in college towns after a football game where they overturned cars and set them on fire…where innocent bystanders were beat up and several students were arrested while under the influence of alcohol/drugs.  Where the cops had no choice but to fire tear gas on these predominately white students…I say that savagery has no color, and not necessarily an educational indicator.  Rather right is right and wrong is wrong.  What these young black men and women did was clearly wrong—savagery.  I just don’t want people to forget that it happens with all colors from time to time—unfortunately.

  21. I just don’t want people to forget that it happens with all colors from time to time—unfortunately.

I would never claim that anyone is immune to this kind of behavior.

But I also wouldn’t water down the discussion by saying “everyone does it”  (not that you were trying to water down what happened) but…

    Not everyone does it.

Why are we so scared to let the spotlight shine on THIS episode.

Why are we so scared to let THIS episode of savage behavior, carried out by a bunch of savages stand on its own?

When I stole candy from the dime-store when I was a kid my mom didn’t sit me down and say “Now Nik, I know that many other kids steal…  So you aren’t the only kid who steals… other kids steal too”  “but stealing is wrong”

Lets not normalize the behavior by pointing out that other incidents that might in part, or whole resemble this incident.

Lets be honest with ourselves.  We have a ‘ghetto’ problem in Milwaukee.  Stuff happens to innocent bystanders in the ‘ghetto’ here in Milwaukee that doesn’t happen ANYWHERE else in the city.

Its NOT just on Juneteenth day… But nearly every weekend.  Look at what happens during all the ‘cruising’

We have out of control MOBS of black youth here in Milwaukee.  And it IS BLACK youth.

Lets state the problem honestly so we can deal with it.

    lest we forget:

Kids beat man to brain death, police say
Nearly 20 suspected of taking part, one just 10 years old

Police said the group chased Young onto the porch of a house at 2021 N. 21st Lane and used bats, shovels and boards to pummel him in an attack that left blood splattered floor to ceiling.
At one point, Young forced his way into the lower unit in a desperate bid for safety, the landlord said, but the kids dragged him back outside, where the beating continued until police responded to a neighbor’s 911 call.

The severity of the attack demonstrated an escalating problem that plagued the area near Johnsons Park all summer, shaken neighbors say: out-of-control teenagers who roam the streets intimidating residents.

Incidents of mob violence are “tragic, unexplainable events” and extremely rare, said Stan Stojkovic, associate dean of criminal justice at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

    Not so rare anymore Stan…

    http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=380996

A 50-year-old Milwaukee man was dragged from a car he was driving and severely beaten Monday night by a group of at least 15 teens and young men after he honked at them to get out of the street they were blocking.

Last year, there were four mob-style beatings in four weeks in Milwaukee, reports the Journal Sentinel, leaving one man dead and three other people seriously injured. None of the beatings was related.

In 2002, more than a dozen people, mostly boys, chased a man through the streets and beat him to death with shovel handles, rakes and tree limbs.

A man with schizophrenia died after being beaten and robbed by a group in 2004
. Six teens were charged; one was convicted, charges against four were dropped and one is awaiting trial.

Four days after that attack, a 14-year-old boy was kicked, punched and hit on the head with a piece of lumber after he exchanged words with a girl. He was in a coma for two weeks. Also that summer, four brothers were beaten by a group armed with bats, bottles, sticks and socks stuffed with canned food.

We have a problem in Milwaukee.

Its a problem with BLACK youth on the northside.

You’re crazy if you drive thru there….

And Jim Doyle says I don’t have the right to protect myself with a firearm when I drive around in MY home-city.

    Sad.

  22. This is obviously a legitmate concern, particulary in places like certain areas of Milwaukee.  It can’t be denied, and thanks for the extra information.  I guess the posts here haven’t been that bad.  Maybe I’ve become a bit defensive from other sites where the posts are VERY racial.  In those cases in was necessary to point out that other colors participate in savagry from time to time…and it’s all wrong.  As a black man, I can honestly say that a certain group within our ethnicity has glorified behaviors like this to the point that it’s hard to ignore.  When Bill Cosby spoke up, he was verbally attacked for saying it like it is.  There’s more people of color who are getting tired of this, but I think it’s going to take many more voices who finally get louder and louder from the black community until it takes a turn back in the right direction.  If anyone from another color mentions anything about this problem, they will be labeled, and, in this day and time, it’s so politically incorrect to say such things—you might as well be called a child molester!  It seems to me like it wasn’t this bad in the 80’s…it seems like somewhere in the early 90’s up ‘til the present time, there’s been more more and more anger in a time of plenty…lot’s of prosperity in America…yet more anger and violence with groups such as these.  I’m trying to understand exactly why…
