Saying there was “absolutely no evidence of remorse” for what he termed “an act of child abuse,” a Washington County judge on Monday rejected a recommendation that a Texas woman and her grown daughter be given probation for abducting the younger woman’s infant daughter in 2005 and instead sentenced them to prison.
“We need to send a message” to others who might contemplate abducting a child in an effort to skirt a judicial custody process, Circuit Judge Andrew Gonring said in sentencing Beth A. Peterson, 23, and her mother, Janet C. Shields, 43.
According to a criminal complaint, Peterson and Shields took the girl from her father, Brian Faber, on Aug. 20, 2005, outside Faber’s home in Allenton as he was taking the girl out of his car in the driveway of his condominium complex.
