Today I write to you as I am aghast at where your campaign has gone. You are violating the Reagan commandment.
The event you “staged” at the Republican convention was phony and hollow. I watched in amazement your shallowness and contrivance. You well know, since you were the Republican candidate in 5 elections (2 you won, 3 you lost), that guests are allowed “inside” if they register and pay the appropriate fee. At this convention I arranged for several people to so observe. Your claim of outsider, not being allowed in, was staged and phony.
Now I see you are holding press conferences to attack your primary opponent. As a math teacher you know that your criticism is contrived. All this for media attention; to mislead the voters.
My dad always told me to sell myself; not to knock down the other fellow. I expect yours did as well. You’re not following that sage guidance
I hope you stop; you are only helping the democrats. It is time for you to leave the field before your integrity is permanently besmirched.
What I find fascinating is that, for a guy who so desperately wants to be seen as a change agent, Scott Walker’s sending the oldest, tiredest, biggest GOP insider of all time to go out and bitch on his behalf.
On this issue, I think Walker has a pretty effective rationale - he borrowed a bunch of money early at lower rates to save money long term, and the numbers Neumann is using don’t reflect that. That’s smart governance - mind you, one that conservatives bemoan when school districts try to do it, but smart nevertheless. But instead of just smacking Neumann with the facts, Walker sends someone else out to whine yet again that there’s still someone else in the race. That doesn’t really make Walker look like a strong candidate.
Instead of engaging the opponent directly, Walker sends a guy who should be Tea Party Enemy #1 out to complain that Walker has to run against someone. For a guy who should coast to victory, Walker’s people are running one of the most reactive, sloppy campaigns ever. Should Walker win the primary, he’d be smart to fire his own team and hire Neumann’s. Whether you or anyone else likes it, at least they’ve got a strategy.
Whether you or anyone else likes it, at least they’ve got a strategy.
Unfortunately it’s the traditional Washington D.C. strategy we’ve all come to hate: Eat your own babies.
In a time when the liberal Democrats are moving heaven and earth to avoid primaries anywhere and everywhere, this is the exact wrong strategy to use to insure we’ll be able to reverse the recent domestic terrorism imposed upon us by liberals.
And Tommy Choo-choo gets to sit on the sidelines and be amused. Never interfere with the enemy when he’s in the process of defeating himself.
Walker needs to stay positive and out of/above the fray.
We had a 3 way primary for congress in May in my district and the only one who stayed positive obliterated both the others - including one who had name recognition.
Walker needs to stay on message and on the high road. I had hoped that Neumann would run for Senate, but now I am glad he did not choose to. He has lost my confidence with his behavior. His goal seems to be getting elected regardless of the tactics he uses. That leads me to believe it’s more about him being Governor, and less about putting a conservative voice in the capitol. If I wanted a scum bag crap weasel who’d sell his own mother to get elected, I’d vote Democrat. I expected more…. and should he win the primary, I will not be voting for him in the general election. You have to draw the line someplace.
Part of Walker’s conundrum with Neumann is that attacking Neumann is extremely difficult. Neumann is very conservative - arguably, more conservative than Walker in a number of regards. One only need hearken back to Neumann’s ‘98 Senate run to understand that. Is Walker supposed to argue that Neumann’s too conservative? That won’t fly. Too liberal? Hardly. Not experienced enough? Arguably a more composite package of life experience than Walker.
But the other part of the issue that I am told by many sources is starting to irritate some powerful people is that thus far, with Scott Walker, there is no “there” there. His campaign essentially is married to Walker’s general pledge to hold the line on taxes. Everything else posed to Walker is effectively deflected towards that topic. You go to his website and there’s hardly anything there in terms of issues. So it’s not like Walker can offer a general answer and then direct people to his website for more information. Walker’s website is filled with the same kind of vacuous non-information as his speeches. There are no details to be found - anywhere.
People can grumble about whether Neumann should or shouldn’t or can or can’t and that’s all fine. I certainly understand those sentiments. But at the end of the day, as an objective observer who won’t be voting in your race, I can tell you what Mark Neumann stands for and I can tell you what Mark Neumann will do - because at least he’s ballsy enough to throw some details on the table.
Walker is playing the Barack Obama strategy - say as little as humanly possible in public and hope that the general public forgets about the substance and buys into the image. It’ll be interesting to see how long that holds up if Neumann’s really committed to running hard for the next three months.
I can tell you what Mark Neumann will do
Yup… support ethanol.
Nuff said
If I wanted a scum bag crap weasel who’d sell his own mother to get elected, I’d vote Democrat
Exactly! Newmann is acting just like a Democrat. Makes no sense to me, maybe he sold out for $.
I see the monkeys’ are tossing their poo at each other again.
You are violating the Reagan commandment.
Seems to be a lot of commandment violating going on.
My dad always told me to sell myself; not to knock down the other fellow.
Unless he is a Democrat!
RS - that second post has to be the most poignant takes on the Republican primary race so far. I think you really hit the mark (unfortunately) and all things considered, the situation may make Barrett the nightmare candidate. While there are policy issues to disagree with, fact is he’s a decent guy so the Republicans can’t count on “anyone but him” motivation like they would have had for Doyle. I agree, at least to this point, I think it’s fair to question whether Walker has the deeper thinking the state needs - at least as a candidate, he hasn’t shown it. Maybe he’s just biding his time, I don’t know. Neumann on the other hand, clearly has the chops, but has made too many mistakes which add up to baggage.
This forum is just superb, i had been looking for this kind of forum for a long time.

Neomom nailed it - a vote for Neumannol is a vote for ethanol. More than ‘nuff said.
The “Reagan commandment” is violated in virtually every Republican primary. Reagan himself violated it. Worth noting that he didn’t come up with the commandment, either.
I really don’t think Walker put Klauser up to this. Here is how I think this really came to be. Klauser played a big part in assuring Nuemann he could win this this race. He encouraged Mark to run, he openly supported him from the start, Mrs. Klauser was Nuemann’s treasurer at the beginning of this race. But Klauser saw the writing on the wall and jumped ship. For Klauser the point of Nuemann was to demonstrate to the party that Jim Klauser is still THE power in the Wis. GOP. But a funny thing happened. No body gave two shits that Nuemann was Klauser’s guy. The Klauser brand is old and tired and younger conservatives really don’t know or care to know who Jim Klauser is. He was Tommy’s guy - so what many of the current GOPers are to the right of Tommy and don’t think he was that great of a governor.
So Klauser needs to rehabilitate his brand. He needs to a reason for Nuemann’s failure and he needs a justification for jumping ship. Nuemann having gone negative gives Klauser cover on both respects. Klauser can take the high road and feign shock and surprise at Nuemann’s actions. And, he is earning a few brownie points with Walker and those who really are running the GOP these days in the process.
The “Reagan commandment” is violated in virtually every Republican primary. Reagan himself violated it. Worth noting that he didn’t come up with the commandment, either.
It seems to be more of a cudgel to attack those who have already attacked the candidate you like. Some candidates, like Reagan or Tommy! are so cheerful and liked by voters (even the ones who will not vote for him) that trying to attack them in that manner will always cause harm to the one engaging in the attacks. Other candidates are vulnerable.
Klauser needs to pay attention that Walker is not the happy warrior type candidate who cannot be hurt by such a fight. Walker needs to realize that Klauser is a Big Government Republican. The more Klauser speaks out, the more he helps Neumann.
Thank goodness Klauser’s letter to Neumann wasn’t negative!
Recess Supervisor gets an A for analysis .
it amuses me that the party of neat has such a messy primary going on.
Who does that former congressman, successful businessman, creator of charter school"s think he is- running against the party choice career politician?
Q_Why can’t he just play nice and get out?
A_Isn"t that why you have primaries?
off topic but a question I had for the Ron Johnson supporters. Will someone post the Bice column from the Journal and explain why Johnson ( a lutheran on the catholic board ) supported reducing the exposure the catholic church has for abuse victims?
It sounds like the Tea Party crowd (like Rand Paul and Mr Johnson) just needs to vetted thoroughly. The closer we look , the more their idea’s are
(to use a republican phrase )
‘far, far outside the mainstream”
Wendy, this is strike one for yer boy!
