I’m listening to the Wisconsin Joint Finance Committee’s debate on concealed carry. Listen here.
UPDATE: One of the morons (read: Democrats) wants to prohibit carrying a concealed weapon withing 1000 feet of a healthcare facility or nursing home. That pretty much exempts most of any urban area. Her amendment failed 3-13.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Some moron (keep reading: Democrat) just cited “Bowling For Columbine” as proof to back his amendment to prevent the carrying of a weapon into a bank. The amendment failed 3-13.
Good luck.
We finally got ours passed here in Missouri, having to override the governor’s veto to get the job done. Now we’re stuck in limbo because a judge has enjoined enforcement of the statute.
My ‘combat tupperware’ would like to leave the house a little more. It gets lonely being locked away so much.
owen, did anything significant come out of that meeting?
It’s interesting to me that they keep adding places where you “can’t pack” (as the Democrat Senator keep saying). She claims they are places that need to be protected, but it just seems to me that she is only succeeding in painting a big red target on these establishments.
They mention hospitals, and the Republicans added an amendment where hospitals can opt out of the ban, and an opponent started whining about abortion clinics. She is afraid someone who is against abortion and is so whacked out that he wants to kill abortion doctors is going to go through the required training class, get a license and shoot up the joint. Shouldn’t she give the receptionists/nurses/doctors the opportunity to defend themselves? It’s all about choice, after all, isn’t it?
It’s still going on. The Dems are putting up amendment after amendment to make a statement and/or make the bill meaningless. They are all getting voted down.
Thanks for reminding me! Do you think they have any chance of overriding a Doyle veto?
DC
Small chance. The State Senate floor debate will be tomorrow at about 11 AM. It should be entertaining.
In the end, we’re 3 years from the next time Doyle faces the voters, so I think he’ll probably veto it. On the bright side, that may halp the Republicans get a larger majority in the legislature naxt November. They only need 2 seats to have a 2/3 majority in the Senate.
There’s always hope, though.
what are the odds Doyle might piss off enough people to trigger a recall election in Wisconsin? highly unlikely, I know.. given that Wisconsinites are very cautious people, and generally have the fortitude to ride out bad times rather than look for a scapegoat.. but it seems that Doyle’s popularity is getting dangerously low.. or is it just me?
While I would absolutely LOVE to get Doyle out of office, I don’t think that all his vetoes are reason enough to recall him. However, if his acts as governor can be proved criminal, like his under the table deals with the casinos (how could all that wheeling and dealing have happened in such a short time AFTER the election with no one knowing ?) or his attempts to control the Tyson Foods strike, then let’s can his ass before he does any more damage. But if differences in opinion were enough to force a recall, then governors would be spending more time fighting recalls than governing the state. That’s why it is SO important to know your candidate before you go to the polls (which I’m sure you do. Who DIDN’T know Doyle was crooked before the election?). And would a recall even work? It took 23 years for Milwaukeeans to recall Gary George!
