Just in time for Memorial Day.
On Monday, people from this Columbia County village will march to the Randolph Cemetery to pay their respects at a memorial to deceased veterans.
But the centerpiece of that memorial, a $3,000 bronze eagle, won’t be there thanks to an unscrupulous thief.
“It’s just a shame someone decided to take that,” said Sheriff Dennis Richards.
The theft was reported Tuesday, but authorities were unsure when the eagle, valued at more than $3,000, was taken.
Ray Niehoff of Randolph VFW Post 9510 said it appears a truck backed up to the memorial, hooked on to the eagle and pulled it out of the monument.
The Randolph VFW was the driving force to have the memorial built. It was dedicated on Memorial Day in 1993 and since then has been the focus of Memorial Day ceremonies in the cemetery.
What will be even more tragic is if some junk yard or recycler accepts this and melts the eagle. In addition, if the junk yard or recycler pays for the statue, that is even more shameful.
Recalibrate please, Owen.
Jerks cut you off in the parking lot or date your ex-wife. This would be a good place to use that “thug” word some of your commenters are so fond of.
This is shameful.
Doesn’t fit for “thug”, that usually implies either brute force or intimidation, but jerk is surely too calm a reference…but then again, uttering the appriate name would make this a less than PG site. Names aside, there is no punishment too harsh for whoever did this, and for anyone who would help after the fact.
Let’s be even more precise:
The proper term here is “tweaker”. This tweaker destroyed $3000 worth of property to get a few dollars worth of crank. You should see what he can do to a housing development in one night.
No. I think “thug” is fitting. Thugs are generally cowards.
I originally had “assholes” but decided to keep it clean.
Agree that the scrap dealer is a bad guy too. When an addict shows up with a bronze eagle or G. Washington on a horse statue it’s stolen beyond doubt. So is 600 feet of aluminum siding or copper downspouts. Scrap dealers should turn these mutts in instead of forking over cash.
The good news is that the eagle was returned to its rightful place in time for the services today. Caught the tale end of the report on the news earlier. Sounds like more good police work. A county officer who heard about the theft on the news remembers an off-handed remark made earlier by someone he was arresting. He called the defendant and the defendant provided information leading to the location of the eagle. As a result—“The Eagle has landed!”
