Jaded

The farther we get into this presidential race, the more I realize that there are people who should run for president and people who do run for president.  Unfortunately, none of the candidates is part of both groups.

  1. Oh, I don’t know.  Al Gore should have run, it’s true.  But Obama is also someone who should have run—and he did!

Who on the GOP side do you think should have run but didn’t?  Gingrich?

  3. I was watching that new fox show last week “Moment of Truth”

I couldn’t help but think of how GREAT it would be to put each of the presidential candidates on that show.

A politician on a polygraph machine… mmm I’d pay to see it!

  4. Don’t put Bush on it—the thing would probably explode.

McCain?  I have to say bravo to Florida voters.  Of all Republican candidates running, he’s the least crazy among them.  I wouldn’t ever vote for him myself, but personally I like him.  Unfortunately, not only is he (and his party) wrong about a great many fundamental issues, he’s frankly too old.

  5. Done and Dusted.  Mac is the Man.

He’s going to clean up on Super Tuesday and be the next president.

  6. His getting a nomination would restore my hope for the Republican party’s sanity.  But he won’t see the inside of the Oval Office unless president Obama or Clinton invites him.  smile

  7. My cynicism has extended to the point where I believe that anyone who wants to be President so badly that they’re willing to endure what passes for a campaign these days is inherently unqualified.

Looks like I’m voting for Fred as a write-in.

Now that Fred’s out, you’re right.

  9. ...would restore my hope for the Republican party’s sanity.  But he won’t see the inside of the Oval Office…

And there is the backhanded compliment - and the ultimate result - just like we’re seeing it in the media.  Unfortunately, GOP voters are following the script like sheep so far.

  10. Scott -

Off the top of my head, I can name a half dozen more qualified people from the GOP and more principled than McCain:

In order: Sanford, Watts, Shadegg, Thompson, Owens, and Jeb Bush.

Whether they could win or not matters not; the point is that they would be better for the Republican brand than John McCain and could have at least given conservatives some one to support.

Me?  Who will I support this year?  I’m taking my ball and going home.  The rest of the ballot needs my help and at least I’ll respect myself in the morning.

  11. McCain is more a Dem than some of the actual Dems…I’m not sure if I’d vote for him or not.

  13. “there are people who should run for president and people who do run for president.”

    I know I should, but I don’t have the money and I don’t think I’d stand a chance in our narrow-minded two-party society.

“Now that Fred’s out, you’re right.”

No Dadio, she didn’t say “people who should run for president and people who play a president on TV.”

What about people that SHOULD run for school board?

  15. Allow me to translate:

McCain?  I have to say bravo to Florida voters.

Translation: I thought after the debacle of 2000 the florida voters were idiots, well yesterday just proved it.

Of all Republican candidates running, he’s the least crazy among them.

Translation: He’s more Liberal than the Democrats

I wouldn’t ever vote for him myself, but personally I like him.

Translation: Only because he is technically running as a Republican. And we all know I just cannot vote republican.

  16. Translation: He’s more Liberal than the Democrats

On what planet?!  He’s pro-life.  He’s against universal health insurance.  He doesn’t want to bring troops home from Iraq.  He’s only lukewarm on global warming.  He’s all about tax cuts that benefit the wealthy more than anyone else.

The fact that he once called Pat Robertson crazy or that he’s sometimes bucked his party’s leadership doesn’t make him a Democrat.

The fact that I find him a relatively principled, thoughtful and sincere man does not mean I find him to be right on the issues.  He isn’t.  And that’s why this Democrat would never vote for him.

I mean, shit.  You think he’s more liberal than Romney??  You better sit and think hard about how one becomes governor of Massachusetts.  Hint: it ain’t by being Reagan or Gingrich or any other kind of dyed-in-the-wool Republican.

  17. You better sit and think hard about how one becomes governor of Massachusetts.

This is actually one of my main reservations about Romney…

Not that I like McCain either.

  18. Among those who we wish would have run, has everybody forgotten Condolezza?
I’d vote for Condi, Fred Thompson, Watts, Jeb Bush, Katherine Harris, Clarence Thomas, Haley Barbour,  maybe Elizabeth Dole.
Looks like a write in for Fred is what’s left.
