I think this recall was ridiculous and unwarranted, but the voters have spoken.
Voters ousted Village President Scott Mittelsteadt and Trustee Jeffery Brandner from office in a recall election Tuesday.
The incumbents were targeted for recall after they cast the only votes among the seven-member Village Board last October in favor of dismantling the village Police Department and switching to a law enforcement services contract with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.
Wendy A. Kannenberg was chosen to replace Mittelsteadt when she received about 61% of votes in that race. She will complete Mittelsteadt’s term, which ends in April 2011.
Kannenberg, 44, is a teacher at Jackson Elementary School.
Brian J. Emmrich received about 67% of votes in a showdown with Brandner.
Brandner had described the recall election as a referendum on the Police Department. He said he intended to push for a county contract for law enforcement services in the 2011 budget.
Interesting, both candidates that won election are government employed - a teacher and a police officer. Motto could be “whatever it takes to keep the children safe and happy” when applied to recreation and police budgets.
Did the two of them actually vote to make the switch to the county sheriff protection, or did they vote to study the possible switch?
How much did this cost?
It appears the people who wanted to save money were ousted by the people who want to spend more money.
Jackson may regret this.
It was a huge mistake. Not only did it cost money, but it was based on the direction that two people thought the village should go. They did nothing illegal or unethical.
It will be interesting to see if these two do anything between now and next April or if they run again at all.
When the right and left folks on this blog agree, I think this must a mistake. Jackson is a funky little village.
