This has all the hallmarks of an operation that has been planned for some time.
Israel has bombed supply tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip in a second day of intense air raids aimed at forcing Hamas militants to halt rocket fire.
Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni says the operation has been a success so far and the aim is to “change realities on the ground” in Gaza.
Israel has threatened to launch a ground assault and is now calling up 6,500 army reservists.
Palestinians say at least 280 people have died in the air raids.
A major tunnel bringing fuel into Gaza from Egypt was among three destroyed, Palestinians say. But Israel says its jets bombed more than 40 tunnels.
Israel accuses Palestinian militants of using the tunnels to smuggle weapons into Gaza.
Boo hoo - you are breaking my heart.
Frankly - I’m wondering what took the Israeli’s so long? Clean out the terrorists… remove their supply lines and don’t stop until it’s finished this time.
Gee, couldn’t they have waited until 1/20/09?
That’s the release date for Jimmy Carter’s new book “We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land”.
President Carter has been a student of the biblical Holy Land all his life. For the last three decades, as president of the United States and as founder of The Carter Center, he has studied the complex and interrelated issues of the region’s conflicts and has been actively involved in reconciling them. He knows the leaders of all factions in the region who will need to play key roles, and he sees encouraging signs among them.
Carter describes the history of previous peace efforts and why they fell short. He argues persuasively that the road to a peace agreement is now open and that it has broad international and regional support. Most of all, since there will be no progress without courageous and sustained U.S. leadership, he says the time for progress is now. President Barack Obama is committed to a personal effort to exert that leadership, starting early in his administration.
Bolded text by me.
Frankly I think our policy in this area needs to change to more of a “since you people cannot seem to live in peace, and since we’re tired of hearing about it and wasting time on it, you now have two weeks to clear out because we’re going to nuke it so much your great great grandchildren will be able to see the glow from Paris.”
Amazing how after 1200 rocket attacks from Hamas into civilian Israeli neighborhoods, only now when Israel decides to respond do we see any outrage in the news media and left wing blogs. Not a peep from them all along, but now they think Israel is being too aggressive.
As much as I would like to Israel finish the job this time, history says they won’t. The fighting will die down, then we get into the “peace process” again and the cycle repeats.
The fact is that if the Palestinians never fired another shot, kidnapped anyone, or blew up another bomb, Israel would completely leave them alone.
“The fact is that if the Palestinians never fired another shot, kidnapped anyone, or blew up another bomb, Israel would completely leave them alone.”
Exactly correct - but that’s never going to happen. The Arabs want Israel to be destroyed. There’s no way to develop a peaceful solution when one side is for the total annihilation of the other. Therefore - I hope they really do carry this out fully - drive out all the non-Israel people and then build an enormous wall to keep them out. That’s the only way its going to happen.
