An Iranian opposition group claimed Saturday that Iran’s capture of 15 British sailors and marines was planned in advance and carried out in retaliation for the U.N. sanctions imposed against the country, as an Iranian diplomat said the case had entered a legal phase.
Gholam-Reza Ansari, the Iranian ambassador to Russia, made his comments to Russian television Vesti-24 on Friday and was quoted by IRNA on its Web site as saying, “the case of the detention of British sailors has taken on a judicial form.”
Austin Bay has some more on the capture. The operation was clearly a well planned to do, much better planned then the cock & bull story the Iranians are using to explain why they did what they did.
Time Magazine reports a similar incident last fall between a joint US & Iraqi patrol and Iranian regulars. The patrol was on the border in Iraq and they ran into a couple of Iranian regulars. The patrol approached one Iranian stayed and when approached a platoon sized force of Iranians revealed themselves from splendid fighting positions.
The result? Four captured Iraqis 0 captured Americans. Why we did not hear about it? Because the Iranian mission failed.
The UK Sailors were climbing down a net at the time of their capture and were screened from their commanders. I thinx boarding & disembarkation protocols are going to be changing.
