Our attention may have been locked on the drama in Madison this week over the state’s public-employee contract, but the Wall Street Journal reports this morning that similar battles are being waged in other Midwestern states.
In Ohio, incoming Republican John Kasich wants to change binding-arbitration rules. And in Iowa, Gov.-elect Terry Branstad wants the state’s largest employee union to reopen the contract it agreed on with Democratic Gov. Chet Culver last month, the Journal reports. Culver OK’d the contracts after he was defeated by Branstad and, unlike the no-raise contract agreements in Wiscosnin, they call for pay hikes.
Well, duh. The cost of government has been on an unsustainable track and a good chunk of that cost is because of public employee unions. Once can’t seriously address the cost of government without addressing the public employee unions.
Times are finally changing for the union goons lead by chief goon and overall big, fat slob Marty Beil. They either need to get on board, or get out of the way.
If Walker is going to get a handle on the state budget he is going to have to set all agency heads down and inform them of the facts of state budget life! As in- ” each of you find 10% of your budgets to trim- no exceptions! Now get to it and be back to me in two weeks with your recommendations. Anyone complaining that they cannot do it, I will have the legislature do it. This meeting is adjourned.”

The only reason that public employee costs are so high is the cost of health care. The unions do not and cannot control the cost of health care, so why are you out to punish them? Why are you so afraid and/or unwilling to go to the root of the problem which is the out of control health care system, which hikes their rates by double digit percentage points almost every year.
Control the health care costs and you save on your own insurance and your taxes. The only ones that get hurt are the CEOs that take in hundreds of millions of dollars each year.
Or does all that make too much sense for you?
It’s not healthcare, it’s the bloated public union pensions that are killing budgets.
Why should all suffer higher taxes for the benefit of a few? Or should public employees be culled like the cattle they are?
Ah, hello Mr. Troll. How’s CRG these days?
Why should public employees get better salaries, pensions, health, dental, sick days, vacations, retirement age and on and on, plus you can’t fire them even if they are incompetent.
Who hasn’t had a bad problem with the public employees?????

Where did you get the idea that public employees get better salaries than their private counterparts? You can see exactly what every state employee makes. It might be interesting if the JS has all private employee pay on line, too.
