Airline officials say in-flight security rules have been eased after a two-day clampdown.
At the captain’s discretion, passengers can once again have blankets and other items on their laps or move about the cabin during the tail end of flight, two industry officials briefed on the situation said Monday.
Sorry, but this is not common sense at all. The government sets a rule, but passes the buck and says the Captain of an airplane can use his/her discretion to not enforce the rules. If the rule is waived and something goes wrong, the government can say, “Its not our fault - the Captain waived the rules.” And can you imagine the lawsuits if the Captain waives the rules and something does happen?
The rules were stupid to begin with. Preventing people from having things in their laps or going to the bathroom in the last hour of a flight is totally pointless; all those rules did was ensure terrorists will do what they need to before the final hour of the flight, if then.
They’re terrorists, after all. Rules prohibiting the mass-murder of people don’t bother them; why would a stupid regulation about blankets?
Besides, this guy had the device hidden on his person; it was not an external object that he attempted to detonate. Short of making everyone fly nude, how would these rules prevent someone from detonating something hidden beneath their clothes?
A much better idea would be to closely scrutinize men ages 17-40, especially those of Middle East or African decent. Yeah…call me a racist, but last time I checked terror attacks were, by and large, carried out by that demographic and not blond haired, blue eyed Swedish nuns.
Political correctness will kill us.
