Illegal Immigrants Busted In West Bend

Dang it… I liked King Buffet.  Good thing there’s an excellent Chinese place across the street.

Tuesday was anything but business as usual for Dave Kundert in what turned out to be part of 20 arrests of immigrants in Fond du Lac and West Bend.
At 11 a.m., the Lucky’s Liquor owner said he noticed seven to eight cars pull up along the curb outside neighboring business King Buffet, 1431 W. Washington St., West Bend, just as the restaurant was about to open.

“They were all unmarked cars, and the regular police were with them also. They were in there for about 30 or 45 minutes, and then brought (seven kitchen and waitress employees out). They were cuffed and they put them in two separate vans,” Kundert said.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Department spokes-woman Gail Montenegro said that Kam Yu Cheng, 57, of West Bend was taken into custody for harboring illegal immigrants for financial gain. She is a lawful, permanent resident from China, according to court records.

  1. Oh, how unfortunate! But the law must be followed. Maybe the owner of King Buffet just wanted to help out these immigrants earn a living.

  2. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

the illegal immigrant workers were paid poorly, had no personal means of transportation and worked 13-hour days and 15 hours on weekends.

    .....

Lin is “quite wealthy” and Wong (the owners) owns several cars, including a $59,000 Lexus and $43,000 BMW.

I think the owners of King Buffet just wanted these immigrants to help them earn a good living.  We used to think of it as “slave labor”.

  3. This is why illegal immigration is bad. We should make it easier for these people to enter legally so they can at least have some rights. It’d probably make it easier to keep track of things as well…
