Hurricane Headed Toward GOP

Well, crap.

So, should the Republicans postpone or cancel their convention if this beast hits like it looks like it will?

No.

The convention has been lined up for months.  People have taken off work, booked hotel rooms, bought plane rides, rented cars, etc.  The GOP has rented facilities, brought in entertainers, scheduled media, etc.  To move the event would cost tens of thousands of dollars - if not millions - and that assuming that the facilities are even available a week later.

Furthermore, if this hurricane hits hard, what good would it do to postpone a week?  The stricken areas will still be in turmoil and the GOP would still be hammered for celebrating during a tragedy.  And the GOP can’t postpone it much more… there’s a general election to worry about.

Hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, fires, etc. hit this nation all the time.  They shouldn’t be allowed to interfere with our selection of a new President.  The GOP should be mindful of such events, release speakers and delegates from those areas to deal with it, and be respectful of the victims, but not let a hurricane detract from having as much of a good time as the Democrats did.  Conventions have become pep rallies (much to my regret), but the GOP has every right to have one as much as the Dems.

  2. If it comes to this they should abandon all parties and spend the entire time helping and cleaning.  Bringing food, water, and blankets.

  3. Run the convention as planed.  Point out how much better Bobby Gindal is at governing comparied to any democrat.  You shouldn’t be afraid of peoples PR spin when they are in a bad or hypocritical position.

  4. Personally I say at the very least scale it back. I am not a real huge fan of the conventions anyway, and this will give the Republicans a GREAT chance to capitalize on the goodwill created by picking a female for VP.

We know for a fact that one way or another the Democrats will hammer us no matter what the RNC decides, why not take this opportunity to make up for the perceived ill-will created by Katrina, by shipping McCain and company down there to help do a little clean up?

It will ABSOLUTELY be a chance for us to take the High Road for the next 60+ days in the election cycle

Yes it will give the Democrats a chance to say that we a playing politics with this, but at the same time do you honestly think the Messiah will be anywhere near NOLA?

  6. Hey great idea. Have the GOP throw a big party tomorrow night as the storm hits.

Anyone who can’t see the commercial featuring Bush playing the guitar while Katrina hit fading to new footage needs to give up on politics right now.

  7. As a security volunteer for the RNC, I can say that Monday events have been scaled back to just what is needed to conduct business, and that other arrangements are being discussed for the rest of the week

  8. The hurriacane is serious, so people should instead of being talking about politics, they should be talking about what are they going to do to help after the hurriacane leaves a disaster.
