Hundreds of Thousands Likely Violate Chicago’s Handgun Ban

It’s a shame when otherwise law-abiding folks have to break the law in order to protect their families and exercise their rights.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule this month on the constitutionality of Chicago’s gun ban, and many believe the justices will strike it down. But, while those on both sides of the gun-rights debate eagerly await the verdict, the decision is essentially irrelevant for many who live in Chicago.

By one expert’s estimate, there is a handgun in as many as 100,000 city households, despite the ban. And gang members or those with misdeeds in mind aren’t the only ones who have them. In some neighborhoods, otherwise-law-abiding citizens feel forced to violate the gun ban, they say, to protect themselves and their families.

  1. What was the rationale for the original ban?

Perhaps like Madison and other cities where houses in the old suburbs are stacked tight, untrained use of a .357 to a .44 magnum to cap or intimidate one sole bad ass, mother-trucker has led to rounds going through 1-3 houses and innocent bystanders.  Granted, there is a constitutional issue here; however, I’ll bet a steak dinner half the people with these “illegal” guns are untrained and, therefore, far more dangerous to there unarmed neighbors than letting the ultra rare armed robbery occur.

    Want to avoid being robbed?
Don’t flash your stash; don’t intimidate strangers.

Secondly, whipping out the hand cannon on the rare occasions one’s family is being raped by Cossacks only ups the adrenalin and odds of errors.  Read Malcolm Gladwell’s Blink in the short chapter where he discusses when police error - adrenalin and knee jerk reactions rarely work well without a Hollywood script or weeks/months of special forces training, which most suburban sportsman lack.

Thirdly, felony crime is down (except white collar).  Fourth, a solid window and door security, hickory baseball bat or better yet a hockey stick, a cell phone, pepper spray or taser (for some reason illegal in WI) , and a pump shotgun or Golden Boy .22 (with five or fewer rounds of safely stored ammo that doesn’t go through 1+ suburban homes) is adequate for 99% of the Chicago suburbs (until the U.S. socio-economic collapse, attack of the zombie-vampires or some other Hollywood Red Dawn).
