Here’s a neat series of photos that’s making the rounds of the gun boards.

There are “gun boards?” *shiver*

Gas escaping before the bullet?
Looks like wasted energy to me.
very cool. speaking of guns:
BREAKING NEWS—Divided three-judge D.C. Circuit panel holds that the District of Columbia’s gun control laws violate individuals’ Second Amendment rights.

Why the shiver?
The gas ahead of the bullet is likely a result of gas escaping around the edge of the bullet before it has a chance to completely expand within the barrel.
The shiver is just a result of the realization that some people view guns as something more than a necessary evil. I just don’t get how people can be so *into* them. Although, I suppose the mechaincs of them are pretty interesting, as this post illustrates.
They’re necessary, but they sure aren’t evil.
Why do you believe that Jed?
You know what makes me shiver? People who shiver at the thought of other people discussing how to safely and properly handle a gun or which guns or ammunitions are right for them.
They’re inanimate objects. They don’t have the capacity to be good or evil.
That’s not what made me shiver. It’s the people that go beyond discussing how to safely and properly handle a gun that scare me. People who think guns are “cool.” That’s who scares me.
I don’t mean “morally evil” Jed. I meant evil as in “causes harm or destruction.” Inanimate objects can certainly be evil under that definition.
Guns don’t scare me. People who have guns but don’t know how they work or how to use them safely scare me. People who know guns, handle them safely, and marvel at the physics behind how they work make me feel safer. And even I have been known to describe a handgun as “pretty.”
Guns are cool. And fun. And a helluva good time.

I don’t mean “morally evil” Jed. I meant evil as in “causes harm or destruction.” Inanimate objects can certainly be evil under that definition.
According to your definition, then: cars, hands, hammers, axes, chain saws, ice picks, screw drivers, trains, buses, planes, rope, fire, phone books, baseball bats, hockey sticks, et al. are EVIL.
I am one to contend that the person that uses an inanimate object to “cause harm or destruction” is the real evil. After all, a hammer can’t swing itself.
Fuzz,
It wasn’t “my definition” it was The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language’s. And by that defintion cars and planes and axes are indeed necessary evils. Just like guns.
Jed,
You scare me.
Wendy,
People that don’t know how to use guns are indeed scary. But they would be less scary if there were no guns, right? And people that use guns responsibly are obviously less scary than crack dealing thugs or whatever. But I think most (certainly not all) of the people that talk about how cool guns are do have a screw loose. I’ve lived in small towns where most of the guys are like that. Even when they’re unarmed, they’re scary. You don’t want to be in the same bar as a group of dudes like that. In my experiance, there is definately a correlation (maybe not causation) between liking guns and being a meat-heads that likes to fight and break stuff. I admit that this is based purely on anecdotal evidence.
I disagree with you. I think you are making some pretty broad generalizations. Jed and Owen certainly aren’t the type of people you described. I think you are letting your fear of guns cloud your judgment.
I readily admit that that statement was a generalization based on personal experiance only, so it may well be wrong. I’ve never met Jed or Owen. I’m sure neither of them ever started a fight or got their kicks from destroying something.
Cars don’t scare me. But people who drink to excess and get behind the wheel of that car scares me. Get it??
Cars should scare you at least a little bit. Most accidents don’t involve alcohol. Most don’t even involve bad driving. Cars are very dangerous. But they have their benefits as well. Just as guns do.
Get it?
I love guns and I think they are some of the most amazing mechanical devises ever made. And I think it is just plain olded fashioned fun to shoot stuff.
What is wrong or scary about that? In my experience people who fear guns do so becuase they are not familar with them. This can easily be over come with a couple of trips to the range. I really encourage it.
Me like guns! Have triple function, sport, threat of defense, and defense.
I get a kick out the chorus of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s song, ‘Saturday Night Special’:
“Its a Saturday night special
Got a barrel that’s blue and cold
Ain’t no good for nothin’
But put a man six feet in a hole “
In life-threatening circumstances, I agree with Jerry Seinfeld, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that.”
Cars should scare you at least a little bit. Most accidents don’t involve alcohol. Most don’t even involve bad driving. Cars are very dangerous. But they have their benefits as well. Just as guns do.
Get it?
I absolutely get it. So, then to follow through with your previous comment, anybody who thinks that cars are “cool” are scary to you. See what I’m saying here? Any inanimate object, when put in the hands of the wrong person, can be dangerous. That doesn’t mean that we should do away with guns or cars or knives or baseball bats. I would much rather be around a “gun nut” with a loaded weapon than some untrained person who is afraid of weapons. Just as i would rather drive on streets with properly trained drivers than those who are afraid of vehicles or are too immature to understand the responsibility that goes along with owning one.
And, to echo the other gun carrying members of this board, there is nothing that can clear your mind faster than an hour out at the range. Well, maybe one thing, but this is mostly a family-friendly board. ![]()
I never suggested we get rid of guns or cars. I think you’re focussing too much on the “evil” and not enough on the “necessary.” I stick up for second amendment rights all the time.
And I do think people who think cars are “cool” usually have a screw loose too. The technology behind cars is cool and impressive and all, but people who put neon lights or spoilers on their cars or like to watch cars turn left for a few hours definately scare me a bit.
I suppose I should try shooting a gun sometime though… If I went to a range, would they have like “rental guns”? Would they be shitty like rental golf clubs usually are?
but people who put neon lights or spoilers on their cars or like to watch cars turn left for a few hours definately scare me a bit.
Wow, could you offend anymore people with that statement.
Geesh, what if I said, people that eat fried chicken and watermelon and tap dance definitely scare me a bit, or how about, people that eat rice or raw fish or like to karaoke for a few hours definitely scare me a bit.
The more politically correct you get the further you slide into stereotypes.
Shucks Jed, pass me dat durn gun I got me a car race dat jes dint turn out right so I gotta shoot me a TV. Les git outcheer and go fer some boot leggin and brown people shootin’ yee Haw.
That how you see people that enjoy weaponry? Or enjoy a sporting event you don’t understand?
Narrow Minded
There are those who think guns are cool because they appreciate the meticulous detail of their form as it relates to their function . . . who appreciate the evoution of technology that has given the gun both power, yet increased safety. Then there are those who think guns are cool ‘cause they can shoot people. They are the ones to be afraid of.
Jim, that’s exactly what I’m trying to say. You said it much better than I did.
I think it is the form and the flow. The ability to create a piece of hardware that is an extension of the body. I make, collect, and refurbish knives, swords, and other bladed weapons. I was a fencer in high school and college. The process was beautiful. I also craft hand made fishing rods and have been told my obsession with fishing and creating works of art for the sport is scary. It is a love of the process, use, never ending striving for perfection that is the drive behind this. I don’t have the same love for guns but I do have more than a few collection pieces to match the blades that they went with. A decade ago I got into collecting computer viruses. Strange as it may sound, and I can assure you that my wife thinks my collection of red disks is strange, some of the code used is also a beautiful thing. Quirky? Yes. Dangerous? I don’t think so. I would rather have a gun collector as a friend than a person that sees them as a necessary evil. The collector can share a bond, an understanding of the sheer appreciation of an art form that is lost on the novice.
im sorry to just come on here without knowin anyone but the guys who are sayin they love guns really do have to take a look at their lives. the reason why they love guns is cuz they dont see the real reasons why they are bad. the american law allowing everyone to have guns causes more people to die than should be dying. does that not just say everything! thousands of deaths and not to mention when u fund that kind of company when u buy a gun u really are dealing with “satan”. guns are not evil, in the sense that its gna murder young puppys, but if they wer not around anymore everybody would be alot happier and safer. i think ther amazin, the physics behind them simple but the construct level is crazy these days, but none of that even begins to compare with say, the chemical breakdown and composition of garlic! if u know what i mean? just because its a complicated way to kill doesnt mean they r any better. realy such a projectile weapon is maybe quite primitive. but alas people will always be sick thats why alot of people will always love guns, most of which are americans. the influences within ur media and the constant strive among urselves to be better than one another creates faceless emotionless monsters at the top of the food chain. cuz they had to fite ther way ther. i think the idea of america was great but its fallen apart. because ther is no land around it, americans think they are safe, but no1 is. americans therefore block out the rest of the world and get no outside influence into ther culture apart from things that have been picked by the media for u. i dont mean all americans sorry but the general public/average joe. u have no history so once u guys had forgotten how bad it cud get its started to fall apart. the creation of the game theory causes people to work for ther own betterment, which in the small scale works for each person, but on the whole causes a bully country. that the WORLD dislikes. the middle east used to b where people looked for evil, but once america even started the war it started to change. all the newspapers of england, ireland, france, germany, spain, italy, croatia, lamen etc all have begun to see it. we are no better, no country is. but the americans think they are and thats why its turnin to shit. but thats not to say i havent met loads of americans i like, its just that i detest the american dream. sorry for ranting but all those comments forced me to. guns are never necessary. the main reason that anyone in the world wud need a gun is to protect themselves from another gun. crime wud b lower!!!!!! some of u guys make me sick
